Welcome to the Business Beat.

Colourful windows

If you are into stained glass, you should get into Hues In Glass, a new business at 186-188 George Street, right across from the Chamber of Commerce beside Dieter and Darcy's No-Frills. The owner Val Cowle has been operating as a home-based business, but has made the leap into a full retail operation. Val has supplies, classes and workshops, plus a number of items for sale, including one-of-a-kind kiln-formed glassware. Val will also create custom-designed stained glass panels for your windows, kitchen cupboards, or your business waiting room or reception area. There is an open house this Saturday August 7. For more information call 705-742-4131.

Back to the future

Pop's Malt Shop is an authentic 50's Style Diner and Ice Cream Parlour on Hastings Street North in Bancroft. Owner Krista McCaw tells me "it's authentic, right down to the girls dressing in poodle skirts. We've even had people break into tears from the onrush of memories and emotions." Opening day was June 30th. They serve Kawartha Dairy ice cream in cones, shakes, sundaes, and banana splits, as well as frozen yogurt, gourmet coffee, penny candy, and hot dogs and sausage on a bun. There is also deck seating, and a huge back yard on the river with comfy chairs, and shade tents and entertainment for the kids, like hula-hoops, hopscotch, and skipping ropes. (forget the kids, let's hula!)

Money ... that's what I want

Congratulations to Money Mart on their recent move down the street. They've moved from 782 George Street, down to 368 George in the former Great Little Bread Company location. They've taken the entire 3000 square feet, and can now offer not only a swanky new lobby, but new offices and training facilities for their 13 district stores. Manager Holly Heenan is thrilled with the new location. Money Mart offers cheque cashing, fast cash advances, Western Union, bill payments, money orders, tax returns, and the new Money Mart Interac Card Account. They're open seven days a week. For more information call 705-876-8100 or visit www.moneymart.ca.
