Saturday, September 4 Film: Bobcaygeon film enthusiasts present the Bobcaygeon Short Film Festival beginning at 7 p.m. at Bobcaygeon-Verulam Community Centre (51 Mansfield Dr., Bobcaygeon, K9V 5R8). The festival will feature eight to 10 productions from two minutes to 40 minutes in length. A variety of films will be shown, ranging from environmental themes to the outdoors and comedy. The festival is in support of Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes health and support services programs offered in the Bobcaygeon region and will also feature information displays by many local groups and agencies, who will be on hand to answer questions about the work they do in the community, and to provide local residents with opportunities to get involved and to help others. Academy Award-nominated director Juan Jos?ampanella returns to filmmaking with his first feature since 2004, having spent the last few years directing episodes for such acclaimed television series as Law & Order, 30 Rock and House. Set in his native Argentina, The Secret in Their Eyes is a suspenseful crime drama with a love story at its core. Thursday, September 16 NEW THIS WEEK Saturday, September 18 & Sunday, September 19 Concert: Showplace presents "The Book of Spells: A Love Story" at Showplace Peterborough Lounge (290 George St. N., Peterborough, K9J 3H2). What happens when two women well into their middle years cast caution (and much else) to the winds to begin sharing a life together? The Book of Spells has toured to locations throughout Southern Ontario and through the Gwanwyn Festival in Wales. It speaks to all who have struggled to find a way to live together (male, female, GLBT and straight). It provokes thought and laughter and never fails to leave audiences deeply moved. Pow Wow: Curve Lake First Nation presents the Annual Curve Lake Pow Wow from noon - 4 p.m. at Lance Woods Park (Whetung St. E., Curve Lake, K0L 1T0). Canada's First Nations still gather for pow wows every year, harking back to the time when their ancestors reunited after searching far and wide for game to feed themselves through winter. Non-Natives are also welcome at the Curve Lake Pow Wow and there is a different theme each year. This year's theme is "Honouring Your Original Being." Enjoy traditional foods, dances, songs and stories! Remember to bring your lawn chairs, sunblock and a good appetite. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for children under 12. Part of the MUSE International Film Series, bringing Canadian and international film to Peterborough since 1998. A drama based on the autobiography by Li Cunxin. At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias. Both decisions turn out disastrous: Illias gambles away the restaurant to a shady real estate agent and Nadine has found a new lover! In honour of the 2010 Year of the Home Child, the Art Gallery of Peterborough is exhibiting a special Memory Quilt created by the descendants of the Home Children where every square tells a story of a Home Child. Between the years of 1869 and 1939, approximately 100,000 children left Britain to adopt new lives in Canada, of whom 10,000 came to Peterborough to the Barnardo Hazelbrae home. Admission is free.
