Workshop: Lang Pioneer Village presents Traditional Music Workshops: "Folk Songs of Peterborough County" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). Traditional folk songs are those that have been passed orally from one generation to another. The songs and their melodies were often altered as they moved through generations. Rural eastern Ontario, including Peterborough County, is one of the richest areas in North America for traditional folk songs. This region has been studies by world recognized folk song scholars who recorded more than 3,500 songs from area singers during the 1950s. This one-day workshop will focus on learning and interpreting traditional Ontario folk songs and melodies from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a group setting. Guitar, mandolin, and banjo players of all skill levels who enjoy singing and/or accompanying singers are welcome. Learn local history along with the songs, bring a lunch and enjoy the day. Dr. Allan Kirby, musician and music historian facilitates the session in a friendly and relaxing manner. This workshop will also be offered on May 27th, June 11th, September 17th & 30th. Workshop: Lang Pioneer Village presents Traditional Music Workshops: "Five-String Banjo for Beginners and Intermediate Players" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). This one-day workshop focuses on the three-finger banjo playing technique. Right hand rolls and left hand chord positions are explored and demonstrated. The basics of group playing and soloing are presented and discussed. Traditional bluegrass, folk, and blues music are the foundation for the workshop. Bring a lunch and enjoy the day. Dr. Allan Kirby, banjo player and music historian facilitates the workshop in a friendly and relaxing manner that is comfortable for both beginners and more experienced players. Celebration: Lang Pioneer Village Museum presents Historic Dominion Day from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). Celebrate Canada's 146th birthday with fun and games for the whole family. Step back in time and learn how the threat of invasion by the "Fenian Brotherhood" spurred the creation of our country with a Fenian reenactment. Tour the Village by free horse-drawn wagon ride. Festival: Lang Pioneer Village Museum presents 17th Annual Antique & Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). This has become one of the largest shows in the Kawarthas with cars of every make and model from 1900 to 2013 expected to arrive. Car enthusiasts from across Ontario showcase their cars with over 50 trophies available to be won. Workshop: Lang Pioneer Village presents Traditional Music Workshops: "An Introduction to Improvisation for Acoustic Guitar and Banjo" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). This one-day workshop introduces guitar and banjo players to the basics of improvisational playing such as use of pentatonic scales and comprehension of traditional harmonic patterns. Dr. Allan Kirby explains improvisation to beginning and intermediate musicians in a simplified and practical manner. There will be a discussion of improvisational styles that are common to jazz, folk, blues, country, and bluegrass music. After the lunch break, participants will be grouped according to skill level and encouraged to begin improvising. This workshop will also be offered on May 29th and June 12th.
