Workshop: Lang Pioneer Village presents Traditional Music Workshops: "Folk Songs of Peterborough County" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). Traditional folk songs are those that have been passed orally from one generation to another. The songs and their melodies were often altered as they moved through generations. Rural eastern Ontario, including Peterborough County, is one of the richest areas in North America for traditional folk songs. This region has been studies by world recognized folk song scholars who recorded more than 3,500 songs from area singers during the 1950s. This one-day workshop will focus on learning and interpreting traditional Ontario folk songs and melodies from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a group setting. Guitar, mandolin, and banjo players of all skill levels who enjoy singing and/or accompanying singers are welcome. Learn local history along with the songs, bring a lunch and enjoy the day. This one-day workshop introduces guitar and banjo players to the basics of improvisational playing such as use of pentatonic scales and comprehension of traditional harmonic patterns. Dr. Allan Kirby explains improvisation to beginning and intermediate musicians in a simplified and practical manner. There will be a discussion of improvisational styles that are common to jazz, folk, blues, country, and bluegrass music.
