Discussion: Kawartha Lakes Food Source presents "Get involved in your community" in Kawartha Lakes. Fundraiser: Maryam Monsef and Jessica Melnik present the 4th Annual Red Pashmina Campaign in Peterborough. Since 2009, this fundraising campaign has sold more than 1,500 red pashmina scarves and raised over $15,000 for initiatives for women and girls in Afghanistan, most recently through Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. The red pashmina scarves are available in Peterborough at Tia Star, Le Joie de Vivre, Glow Maternity, Tango, Sympathy for the Rebel, My Left Breast, New Canadians Centre, and the YWCA. Workshop: City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library presents Young Writers Workshops beginning at 6 p.m. at Fenelon Falls Library (19 Market St., Fenelon Falls, K0M 1N0). We are pleased to present a series of workshops for young writers which encourage children to write and illustrate their own books. The meetings will be held on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month commencing on February 7th, 2013. Workshops will focus on generating an idea, creating a story outline, writing the story, establishing the book layout, including illustrations and producing a completed book. Suitable for children aged 8 - 11 years, writing workshops help to elevate self-esteem and create a positive outlook on books and reading. More than 50 children have participated in the Library’s young writer workshops and have written and illustrated their own books. Many of these books are available in the Library and can be borrowed by other young library patrons. You can find them in the library online catalogue under the key words “you want to be a writer”. A similar workshop will be held in the spring at the Lindsay branch library – dates and time to be announced. Have you ever wanted to run further or faster′ This is your opportunity to learn how to make that happen. Instructor Ryan Hawkrigg will provide tips and advice on improving your running and helping you achieve your athletic and personal goals. Ryan has competed as a varsity athlete in both cross country and track and field at the national and international level and has a bachelor of science in Human Kinetics. This art exhibition will feature portraits of people living in Peterborough by people living in Peterborough. Workshop: Community Living Peterborough and George St. United Church Community Hub presents Portrait Workshop - Acrylics/Multimedia from 6 - 9 p.m. at George Street United Church (534 George St. N., Peterborough, K9H 3S1). We have organized a series of art workshops to assist members of the Peterborough community to prepare for and begin to create their portraits for June’s Peterborough in Portrait (June 15 - June 22, 2013 at the Canadian Canoe Museum). Workshop: Artspace presents "I C 3D: How to Make Your Own 3D Images. Intro and Craft Night." from 5:30 - 9 p.m. at Artspace (378 Aylmer St. N., Peterborough, K9J 7X6). You’ve probably found a lenticular image inside a Cracker Jack box or on fancy album packaging for a favorite band. Lenticular lenses are thin sheets of plastic that give the illusion of flipping, shimmering, or morphing as you move them in front of your eyes. Stereoscopes are 2 images placed side by side and viewed with special glasses to create 3D visual effects. This 3-part workshop will teach participants how to create their own lenticular & stereoscopic images using ArtSpace’s Media Lab. Participants will build dynamic 3D images using DIY methods and computer software (maquettes, lighting, Photoshop, and Illustrator), and learn about lenticular printing and stereoscopic photography. Each participant will receive one lenticular and have their work featured on ArtSpace’s Tumblr page at the end of the workshop. Tonight we introduce the 3D imagery and prepare hand-crafted models or digitally composited files to use for your lenticular and stereographic images. Return on June 22 and 29. Workshop: Artspace presents "I C 3D: How to Make Your Own 3D Images. Part 2: Photoshop for Lenticular & Steroscopic Printing." from 5:30 - 9 p.m. at Artspace (378 Aylmer St. N., Peterborough, K9J 7X6). You’ve probably found a lenticular image inside a Cracker Jack box or on fancy album packaging for a favorite band. Lenticular lenses are thin sheets of plastic that give the illusion of flipping, shimmering, or morphing as you move them in front of your eyes. Stereoscopes are 2 images placed side by side and viewed with special glasses to create 3D visual effects. This 3-part workshop will teach participants how to create their own lenticular & stereoscopic images using ArtSpace’s Media Lab. Participants will build dynamic 3D images using DIY methods and computer software (maquettes, lighting, Photoshop, and Illustrator), and learn about lenticular printing and stereoscopic photography. Workshop: Lang Pioneer Village presents Traditional Music Workshops: "Folk Songs of Peterborough County" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Lang Pioneer Village (104 Lang Rd., Keene, K9H 3M3). Traditional folk songs are those that have been passed orally from one generation to another. The songs and their melodies were often altered as they moved through generations. Rural eastern Ontario, including Peterborough County, is one of the richest areas in North America for traditional folk songs. This region has been studies by world recognized folk song scholars who recorded more than 3,500 songs from area singers during the 1950s. This one-day workshop will focus on learning and interpreting traditional Ontario folk songs and melodies from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a group setting. Guitar, mandolin, and banjo players of all skill levels who enjoy singing and/or accompanying singers are welcome. Learn local history along with the songs, bring a lunch and enjoy the day. Here’s a chance to take a "quick dip," in the Camp Kawartha waters with a day long program that both campers and parents can enjoy. Parents can opt for dropping their children off in the morning, or join their children at camp for the day. Campers then join a cabin group for morning activities while parents are led through a camp orientation – a crash course of everything they need to know about their child’s experience at Camp. Trent University Associate Professor of English Literature, Michael Epp, hosts our final Festival event. Fitness: Community Living Peterborough presents "iCan Shine" Bicycle Camp at Lakefield-Smith Community Centre (20 Concession St., Lakefield, K0L 2H0). This unique camp will support and teach people who live with an intellectual disability, to safely ride a conventional 2-wheel bicycle. This camp will run in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association of Peterborough, Kerry's Place Autism Services, Peterborough Green Up, BIKE: Peterborough Community Bike Shop and Bridges Canada. During the camp, we will use adapted bicycles, a specialized program and trained staff to teach riders how to ride a standard 2-wheel bike. Riders will attend one 75-minute session a day and over the course of the 5-day camp, the adapted bike will be adjusted to slowly introduce more challenge to the riders at their own pace. We will also explore art, literacy and music workshops. The week is concluded with an inspiring award ceremony. Fitness: Peterborough Rowing Club presents Adult Learn to Row - Session 5 at Peterborough Rowing Club (Nassau Mills Road, Peterborough, K9J 7H6). Each summer, we offer an introduction to the sport of rowing through our Learn-to-Row programs. We encourage people of all shapes, sizes and ages to participate. There are no special skills required, other than an adequate swimming ability. The Adult Learn-to-Row program consists of six evenings of instruction (2 evenings/week). On the first night, you will start out on land, learning the basics of stroke technique on the ergometers (rowing machines). Successive evenings will find you on the water, progressively working up to rowing in a crew of four or eight with a coxswain (one who steers, motivates and helps the crew to row together). Nothing feels better than feeling the boat gliding over the water. Fitness: Peterborough Rowing Club presents Adult Learn to Row - Session 6 at Peterborough Rowing Club (Nassau Mills Road, Peterborough, K9J 7H6). Each summer, we offer an introduction to the sport of rowing through our Learn-to-Row programs. We encourage people of all shapes, sizes and ages to participate. There are no special skills required, other than an adequate swimming ability. The Adult Learn-to-Row program consists of six evenings of instruction (2 evenings/week). On the first night, you will start out on land, learning the basics of stroke technique on the ergometers (rowing machines). Sport: Wildfire Golf Club presents PGA Tour Canada - The Wildfire Invitational in Peterborough. It is with great pleasure that we announce that Peterborough & the Kawarthas will be an official scheduled tournament stop for PGA Tour Canada with The Wildfire Invitational. Wildfire Golf Club has been ranked in the Score Golf Top 100 courses in Canada. The club has secured the tournament for 3 years, ensuring this valuable opportunity for the region through the 2015 season. This will be Canada’s only official Pro-Am Tournament. This unique format features amateurs playing in teams with 2 different PGA Tour Canada players in first and second rounds of the tournament with the final 36 holes reserved for professional competition. The purse for this event is $150,000. Its field size is 128 professional players and 64 amateurs. It is estimated that the tournament could see up to 4000 spectators and approx 600-700 room nights. This one-day workshop will focus on learning and interpreting traditional Ontario folk songs and melodies from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a group setting. Guitar, mandolin, and banjo players of all skill levels who enjoy singing and/or accompanying singers are welcome. Learn local history along with the songs, bring a lunch and enjoy the day.
