Workshop: City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library presents Young Writers Workshops beginning at 6 p.m. at Fenelon Falls Library (19 Market St., Fenelon Falls, K0M 1N0). We are pleased to present a series of workshops for young writers which encourage children to write and illustrate their own books. The meetings will be held on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month commencing on February 7th, 2013. Workshops will focus on generating an idea, creating a story outline, writing the story, establishing the book layout, including illustrations and producing a completed book. Suitable for children aged 8 - 11 years, writing workshops help to elevate self-esteem and create a positive outlook on books and reading. More than 50 children have participated in the Library’s young writer workshops and have written and illustrated their own books. Many of these books are available in the Library and can be borrowed by other young library patrons. You can find them in the library online catalogue under the key words “you want to be a writer”. A similar workshop will be held in the spring at the Lindsay branch library – dates and time to be announced. Sporting Event: Village of Millbrook and Cavan Monaghan Townsip presents Rally in the Valley in Millbrook. The main street of Millbrook will play host to the Canadian International Region All American Soap Box Derby Rally Series, with racers from Ontario, Quebec & NY State. Featured in this event will be the Canadian National Super Kids, a racing division for special needs children. For Millbrook & Township youth & families there are plans in the works for hosting an AASBD Millbrook Local Stock Championship. This is a qualifier for the World Championships in Akron in July. Organizers arranged for the lease of 10 Stock Division All American Stock cars; families can lease the cars for the event for a nominal cost, less than building one of your own. Local & area businesses are also invited to sponsor the leasing of a car for an employees’s child as well. The winner of the Millbrook Local will be awarded an invitation to represent Millbrook & Cavan Monaghan Township at the 76th running of the All American Soap Box Derby Championship in Ohio from July 22nd to July 27th. Family: Camp Kawartha presents "Mini-Kawartha Day" from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Camp Kawartha (1010 Birchview Rd, Lakefield, KOL 2H0). Here’s a chance to take a "quick dip," in the Camp Kawartha waters with a day long program that both campers and parents can enjoy. Parents can opt for dropping their children off in the morning, or join their children at camp for the day. Parents and campers will be given a tour of the camp and participate in some of the games and icebreakers we play on our first day. Campers then join a cabin group for morning activities while parents are led through a camp orientation – a crash course of everything they need to know about their child’s experience at Camp. Lunch and dinner will be provided in our dining hall where campers and parents participate and experience the dining hall spirit and routines unique to our camp. Parents and campers will participate in afternoon activities including our climbing wall, high ropes, eco, archery and boating activities. Summer Camp: The Darkroom Project presents "Zoom" Photography Camp, Session 1, ages 10 - 14 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Gallery in the Attic (140-1/2 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, K9H 2K8). This camp is designed to explore and experiment with film photography. Participants will receive first hand experience using various cameras to capture images on film. Throughout the course, we will teach traditional photography printing in the darkroom, as well as alternative methods - some of which they would be able to recreate at home. At the end of each session, the youth will put together a professional level exhibit of their photographs for their families, friends, and general public at Gallery in the Attic. There will be 4 sessions offered throughout the summer. Each session is 9 days. Light snacks will be provided but participants are expected to provide their own bagged lunch each day. Summer Camp: The Darkroom Project presents "Zoom" Photography Camp, Session 2, ages 10 - 14 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Gallery in the Attic (140-1/2 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, K9H 2K8). This camp is designed to explore and experiment with film photography. Participants will receive first hand experience using various cameras to capture images on film. Throughout the course, we will teach traditional photography printing in the darkroom, as well as alternative methods - some of which they would be able to recreate at home. This camp is designed to explore and experiment with film photography. Participants will receive first hand experience using various cameras to capture images on film. Throughout the course, we will teach traditional photography printing in the darkroom, as well as alternative methods - some of which they would be able to recreate at home. At the end of each session, the youth will put together a professional level exhibit of their photographs for their families, friends, and general public at Gallery in the Attic.
