Film: Tweed & Company Theatre and the Toronto International Film Festival present TIFF Film Circuit Bancroft - "We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of the Ontario Farmerettes" (2025) beginning at 7:00 pm at Bancroft Village Playhouse (5 Hastings St. S., Bancroft, K0L 1C0). A documentary that uncovers the largely overlooked contribution of the 40,000-plus teenage girls and young women who worked on Ontario farms during the Second World War, replacing men who had gone overseas. Through archival footage, photographs, and first-person interviews, the film tells how the "Farmerettes" harvested crops, operated machinery, and sustained Canada's food supply while gaining independence, skills, and confidence at a pivotal moment in their lives. By centring the voices of surviving Farmerettes, the film restores these women to Canada’s wartime history, highlighting both the physical demands of their labour and the lasting pride they feel in having "lent a hand" when the country needed them most.
