Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, "The NeverEnding Story" (1984) follows Bastian Balthazar Bux, a lonely boy who seeks refuge from bullies in an old bookstore. There, he discovers a mysterious book detailing the plight of Fantasia, a world being consumed by a void known as "The Nothing." As Bastian reads, the narrative shifts to the young warrior Atreyu, tasked by the Childlike Empress to find a cure for her terminal illness and save their realm. Accompanied by Falkor, a luck dragon, Atreyu faces a series of psychological and physical trials. The film is known for its practical effects and its exploration of the necessity of human imagination. Eventually, the boundary between the reader and the story blurs, requiring Bastian to participate in the narrative to prevent Fantasia’s total disappearance.
