Theatre: Northumberland Players presents "Pugwash" by Vern Thiessen beginning at 7:30 pm at Firehall Theatre (213 Second St., Cobourg, K9A 3N7). Set in 1957 against the tense backdrop of the Cold War, "Pugwash" by Vern Thiessen centres on the historic first Pugwash Conference in Nova Scotia, where global scientists and academics dubbed the "Thinkers" assemble to discuss the threat of nuclear annihilation. As international figures like Alex from Russia and Ogawa from Japan struggle with post-war trauma and deep mutual suspicion, they find themselves deeply moved and humbled by the innocent welcome of two local children, thirteen-year-old Conni and eleven-year-old Jamie. However, the fragile peace of the summit is thrown into jeopardy when a spy, posing as a reporter, manipulates young Jamie into leaking sensitive information, threatening both the lives of the "Thinkers" and the global hope for peace. Evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on April 2 and 3, 9 and 10, and 15 to 17, with 2 p.m. matinee performances on April 4, 11, and 18. Cost: $32.
