A Cobourg man is facing a criminal negligence charge and police are cautioning the public following a dog bite incident in Cobourg earlier in the week.
At around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday (September 1), police responded to a report that a loose dog had bitten an adult in the area of Elgin Street West and William Street.
The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Through investigation, police identified the dog’s owner and determined there had been previous documented incidents involving the animal.
As a result of the police investigation, a 57-year-old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The dog in question, a Dogo Argentino, remains on the loose and police and municipal law enforcement officers are searching for it.
The Dogo Argentino is a large and muscular dog breed developed in Argentina during the 1920s for hunting big game. It has a short and almost entirely white coat, a broad head, powerful jaws, and an athletic build. Although the dogs are affectionate and loyal to their human family, poorly socialized or trained dogs can be aggressive with other people and dogs.
Due to concerns over its high prey drive, hunting background, and bite strength, the Dogo Argentino is legally restricted or outright banned in at least 18 countries.
