The Peterborough Petes, Peterborough Hockey Association, Peterborough Girls Hockey Association, City of Peterborough and Parks Canada are hosting Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday, February 9, 2013 — along with two days of local events leading up to the bid day on Saturday.

Beginning at 12 p.m., Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean and Coach’s Corner star Don Cherry will be on location on the Trent Canal at the world-famous Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site, where the outdoor Under the Lock Hockey Tournament is taking place.

CBC’s national broadcast features Ron and Don along with other Hockey Night in Canada personalities and NHL alumni, as they connect Canadians to our national pastime through communities stories from across the country.

The day-long broadcast also includes triple header NHL action, as all seven Canadian teams will be featured including Edmonton at Detroit (2 p.m.), Winnipeg at Ottawa (2 p.m.), Toronto at Montreal (7 p.m.), and Calgary at Vancouver (10 p.m.).

The Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada broadcast begins at noon with a two-part feature entitled “Celebrating the Game”, to be broadcast live from the Under the Locks tournament.

The second part of the feature airs at 5 p.m., following the conclusion of the Edmonton at Detroit and Winnipeg at Ottawa games.

On Saturday night, Ron McLean will introduce Don Cherry during the opening ceremonies of the Peterborough Petes annual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society (preceding the game with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds). This year’s event is titled “Pink in the Rink – A Tribute to Hockey Moms”.

Travel Logistics for Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada Event at Peterborough Lift Lock

The City of Peterborough has implemented a road closure for a section of Ashburnham Drive, designated special event parking areas, and arranged for free bus shuttles to help direct the traffic anticipated for the Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada activities planned at the Peterborough Lift Lock on Saturday, February 9. Full day coverage from Peterborough begins at noon on CBC-TV.

Ashburnham Drive Closure

Ashburnham Drive will be closed on Saturday, February 9 from Hunter Street to Maniece Avenue from 6:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Northbound traffic on Ashburnham Drive will be detoured either west along Maria Street or east on Maniece Avenue to Television Road. East bound traffic on Hunter Street will be directed either south on Armour Road or north on Ashburnham Drive to the Old Norwood Road and east to Television Road. The only traffic that will be allowed through the road closure barricades will be City shuttle buses, team buses, and event organizers/volunteers with passes.

Emergency No Parking

Emergency No parking areas will be posted along the west end of Maniece Avenue; Ashburnham Drive north of Hunter Street; and along Armour Road, north of Maria Street. Vehicles parked in emergency, no parking areas will be towed. Owners of towed vehicles can pick them up from the parking lot at the County EMS (Ambulance) headquarters on Armour Road.

Special Event Parking

The City has designated a number of parking lots for special event parking. They include: Armour Hill, Beavermead Park, East Gate Park, the Johnson Property across from East Gate Park, and the former Ashburnham snow dump.

Shuttle Buses

The City is providing free bus shuttle service to and from all of the special event parking lots from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. One bus will be on a continuous loop from Armour Hill to Beavermead Park and then back up Ashburnham through the barricades to drop off and pick up passengers.

To avoid parking challenges and to ease traffic congestion, event participants are encouraged to take the Route 11 Ashburnham bus to and from the terminal. This bus will detour from Hunter Street to Maria Street via Rogers Street. Regular rates will apply.

The City will also be running a shuttle service from several local hotels to and from the tournament area to accommodate teams, players, and their families. Details of that service are being finalized.

On Street Parking

The City anticipates that visitors will also be parking along area side streets and encourages them to respect local residents by not blocking driveways.

Sunday, February 10

The road closure will not be in place for February 10. Public parking will be available at the Lift Lock Golf Course. The bus shuttle service will not be provided.
