A new holiday tradition continues to blossom this year in the grand old auditorium at the former Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School (201 McDonnel St., Peterborough).

The third annual Dan Fewings & Friends Community Christmas Concert is a family-friendly variety show, featuring great music and hints of comedy and theatre.

The event is in support of the Teachers for Kids Foundation, a registered charity made up of teachers and community members who raise funds for students from low-income families so they can take part in extracurricular activities.

This year’s show takes place Saturday, December 6th at 8 p.m., just after the Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade wraps up (look for Teachers for Kids in the parade as well).

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and free for children 10 and under.

You can purchase tickets at Ashburnham Ale House (128 Hunter St. E., Peterborough, 705-874-0333), Blue Streak Records (444 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-6078), and The Spill (414 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-748-6167).

The event is proudly sponsored by Mara Cook Realtor, kawarthaNOW.com, Bob Campbell and Heather Silvestri at Investors Group, and Peterborough Volkswagen Ltd..

The concert will feature an eclectic mix of genres and artists, including Bowskill and Fewings, Melissa Payne, Shai Peer, The Lonely Parade, Josh Fewings, and Maggie Self. Other entertainment will include the In Your Neighbourhood Players and The Great Spontini, along with guest cameos and special guest musicians.

Bowskill and Fewings — fresh off of a successful tour through Quebec, the Maritimes, and Newfoundland — bring their well-honed bluegrass and folk tunes to the stage. The band features Jimmy Bowskill on mandolin and stand-up bass and the evening’s host Dan Fewings on guitar, complete with sweet two-part harmonies.

Melissa Payne continues to get wide praise for her excellent voice and roots-tinged songs. Whether it’s her vocals or fiddle work, she continues to impress audiences. Her latest album was produced by Greg Keelor (of Blue Rodeo fame).

Shai Peer is a renowned keyboard and piano player. His skill and high-energy performances were a hallmark of Weber Brothers shows for years and years.

The Lonely Parade are a young three-piece alternative rock band. Their star is on the rise, as they just completed their first tour (to the East Coast) and were the darlings of this year’s Peterborough Folk Festival.

The Mayhemingways’ Josh Fewings — who is co-producing the show — will be playing drums with some of the acts.

Maggie Self plays and writes a hybrid of acoustic and alternative tunes. Deep and meaningful lyrics emerge in her songs. Maggie most recently played in September at Peterborough Pride.
