October is a great month to go see some music. The evenings and days get a little cooler, but the venues around Peterborough and the Kawarthas are still hot inside with great music and entertainment all month long.
Yacht Rock at the Gordon Best Theatre and Television Rd at the Red Dog in Peterborough on October 2
There are two excellent events in Peterborough on Friday, October 2nd.
Peterborough’s favourite niche cover band Yacht Rock return to the Gordon Best Theatre (216 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-876-8884) and present “Too Uncool for Back-to-School” from 9 p.m. to midnight.
This “light-hearted but sincere tribute” to smooth rock sounds of the late 70’s and early 80’s will lead to dancing and more dancing. Let this all-star band guide you on the good ship Smooth. Players include David Tough, Kelly McMichael, Rico and Marcus Browne from the Weber Brothers, and more. Tickets are available at the door. Enjoy!
“Reeling in the Years” by Steely Dan – Yacht Rock
Also that evening is a CD release party by up-and-comers Television Rd at The Historic Red Dog Tavern (189 Hunter St. W, Peterborough, 705-750-1710). Originally formed in 2013 by a group of Trent University students, this young band has been gaining momentum by playing exclusively original material. They’ve been featured on TVCogeco and CBC and won Audience Choice at Trent’s Battle of the Bands earlier this year. Check out their blend of rock and beyond.
Also on the bill are Toronto “afro-Cuban jazzy surf punks” The Holy Gasp and well-known duo Watershed Hour. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the cost is $8 to get in.

Parents of young children who also happen to be music fans may really enjoy The Wiggles Live at Showplace Performance Centre (290 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-7469) on Wednesday, October 7th at 3 p.m.

Artists for United Way benefit concert at Cobourg’s Victoria Hall on October 9
Some of Cobourg’s bright local talent will be on display on Friday, October 9th at The Concert Hall at Victoria Hall (55 King St. W., Cobourg, 905-372-2210) for Artists for United Way.
The benefit will feature Matt Williams and Alyssa Morrissey, Madman’s Window, Garage Dog, Cale Crowe, and Ellen Torrie.
The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 each.

Rock the Vote PTBO at the Gordon Best in Peterborough on October 9
With this year’s important federal election coming up, there will be an event that merges the importance of voting with rock music. Rock the Vote PTBO takes place on Friday, October 9th at the Gordon Best Theatre (216 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-876-8884).
Musical entertainment will include Sean Conway, Nick Ferrio + his Feelings, Graeme Kennedy, and Cross Dog.
The all-ages show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10, except it’s FREE if you register with Elections Canada at the show. Volunteers will be available at the door to help people register online to vote (new registrants need to bring a driver’s license with a current address or a provincial ID card to register online).
Sounds like a great lineup and a great idea!

Benefit for Buzz Thompson at The Venue in Peterborough on October 18
There’s a benefit for one of the city’s musical greats on Sunday, October 18th at The Venue (286 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-876-0008).
“Because It’s Buzz” raises money for Peterborough’s own Buzz Thompson, who suffered a stroke in the summer.
A musical institution in Peterborough, Buzz was a member of Ronnie Hawkins’ band The Hawks for many years and played with numerous others, including Max Mouse and the Gorillas.
This will be a talent-packed affair with a who’s who of musicians including The Hawks, Jimmy Bowskill & The Barnburners, Rick Fines with Roly Platt, The Weber Brothers, Rocket Revue featuring Jane Archer and Jerome Godboo, Beau Dixon, Al Black and the Steady Band, Shea and Brent Bailey, Jerome Levon Avis, Dave Mowat, and many more.
What a line-up! MCs are Paul Rellinger of Peterborough This Week and Terry Guiel, musician and Executive Director of the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area.

His tunes are funny, irreverent, and infused with groove. Hal hails from Winnipeg, but now calls Nova Scotia home. Catch him on his latest tour.
