A teenager has drowned after his canoe capsized on Cross Lake south of Algonquin Park on Monday afternoon (July 20).
At around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, officers with the Bancroft Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a marine distress call involving a capsized canoe.
A search for the missing occupant of the canoe was conducted by Whitney Paramedic Services, Renfrew County Paramedic Services (including its Sierra Team, a specialized unit designed to provide advanced medical care and rescue operations in remote or backcountry environments), OPP Aviation Services, OPP officers, and local residents.
With assistance from members of the OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, the missing individual was located and pronounced dead.
Bancroft OPP have identified the victim as a 17-year-old boy from Mariposa Township in Kawartha Lakes, but have not released his name.
A postmortem will be conducted.
