As someone who grew up loving the community around her, Ruby Byrne is eager to connect with more people in Peterborough and help them better plan for their future as a new associate lawyer at LLF Lawyers LLP.
Born and raised in Peterborough, Byrne is a graduate of Trent University’s Dual Degree Program, where she earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and Bachelor of Laws in partnership with Swansea University. Despite spending three years in Wales during her studies and having travelled extensively throughout her life, she always knew she’d return home to Peterborough.
“I love what this community has to offer,” Byrne says. “I love that when I go places, I know people and they know me. It’s hard to find that connection when you go elsewhere. Peterborough is home.”
Byrne began at LLF Lawyers in March 2025, finished her articling this January, and was called to the bar in Ontario in June. Now, driven by a passion for hearing people’s stories and what matters most to them, she is focusing her work on estate planning and estate administration.
“I love being able to support someone as they have one of the most difficult conversations they might ever have,” she says. “My job is to make that process and planning as easy and seamless as possible.”
LLF Lawyers helps with estate planning in even the direst circumstances, including through hospital visits. No matter the situation, Byrne will offer compassionate, sensitive, and kind care — meeting you where you are, whether you’re planning your own estate affairs or administering someone else’s estate.
“You’re sometimes meeting people at the worst time in their life, when they’ve just lost someone that’s incredibly important to them,” Byrne says. “It’s a very sensitive area of work so it takes compassion, and it takes kindness, and we go above and beyond for our clients because that’s what is important to us.”
“It’s really important for us in terms of an access-to-justice standpoint that these documents are accessible, and that we can inform you and arm you with as much information about this as possible, so that you feel good about it walking away,” Byrne explains.
She hopes to reach younger clients and change the commonly held belief that wills and estate planning are only for those later in life. Though Byrne recognizes there can be a barrier to access for young people, she says having plans in place can offer peace of mind, remove hassles later, and better plan for debt management.
“Spending that now on something that is as important as wills and powers of attorney will save you and your family and your estate more money down the line,” she says.
As the first person to have gone to university in her family, Byrne remains grateful to those who have supported her and looks forward to maintaining and growing her roots in Peterborough.
“To be able to have made it this far has only come from the support that I’ve had from my family. They’re incredible people,” she says. “I’m proud to be a Byrne.”
