Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for possible locally significant rain in the Kawarthas region beginning Saturday afternoon (August 22) and continuing through Sunday.
The special weather statement is in effect for Peterborough County, Kawarthas Lakes, and Haliburton County.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over southwestern Ontario on Saturday morning, moving into the Greater Golden Horseshoe in the afternoon.
Given the potential for slow-moving showers and thunderstorms and for some areas to receive multiple rounds of precipitation, local amounts exceeding 50 mm are possible.
Note that rainfall amounts will be highly variable across the region and not all areas will receive this much rain. There remains considerable uncertainty as to exactly which areas will receive the highest rainfall amounts.
Additional showers are expected through Sunday, especially to the east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
Water may pool on roads and in low-lying areas.
Don’t drive through flooded roadways.
Avoid low-lying areas. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
