Walmart Canada has officially confirmed it will open a new Supercentre in Lindsay, bringing the retail chain to the City of Kawartha Lakes for the first time.
On Tuesday (September 8), the company announced the approximately 142,000-square-foot store will anchor a new SmartCentres development at Highway 35 and Sylvester Drive in the northwest corner of Lindsay. It is expected to open in 2028.
The Supercentre will offer a full grocery selection, including fresh produce, meat, seafood, deli foods, baked goods, dairy products, frozen foods, and pantry essentials.
It will also carry Walmart’s general merchandise, including clothing, home products, electronics, health and wellness products, and seasonal items. Other services will include a pharmacy, a vision centre, and in-store pickup and delivery.
“We’re incredibly excited to finally bring a Walmart Supercentre to Lindsay,” said Walmart Canada vice-president of format development Paula Bonner in a media release.
“We know people in the community have been asking for a Walmart, and we’ve heard them. We can’t wait to open our doors and give customers more choice, greater convenience and access to our everyday low prices, including on fresh groceries.”
Walmart currently operates three Supercentres in the greater Kawarthas region, including two in Peterborough and one in Cobourg. The Lindsay location will become its fourth in the region.
According to the City of Kawartha Lakes, the announcement follows years of planning for population growth and investment in municipal infrastructure in Lindsay.
The city said new neighbourhoods developed by companies including Tribute Communities and Kingsmen Group have brought more residents to Lindsay, increasing demand for shopping and other services and helping create the conditions for new commercial development.
“Walmart is a sign of how far Kawartha Lakes has come,” said Kawartha Lakes Mayor Doug Elmslie.
“We’ve spent years preparing for growth by investing in city infrastructure and working alongside the development community,” Elmslie added. “Reaching this milestone took the shared commitment of previous councils and city staff, as well as Walmart and SmartCentres, all working together to move this project across the finish line. It’s something our whole community can celebrate.”
SmartCentres, which is Walmart’s only real estate development partner in the world, helped Walmart enter the Canadian market in 1994 and has since expanded to every province.

The Lindsay store is part of Walmart Canada’s previously announced $6.5-billion investment to expand its stores and supply-chain network across the country.
It is the fifth new Ontario Supercentre announced as part of the investment. A new Hamilton location is scheduled to open this fall, with additional stores planned for Brampton, London, and Ottawa.
Walmart Canada currently operates 150 stores and employs more than 45,000 people in Ontario.
