Art Gallery of Peterborough presents Fallon Simard with jes sachse: Been Here So Long

Date:Until Sunday, April 8, 2018
Location:    Art Gallery of Peterborough (250 Crescent St.., Peterborough)
Resistance is always in conversation with care. This is the first material collaboration between jes sachse & Fallon Simard. Their work explores strategies for PTSD and continuance in the struggle of survival. Taking up the aesthetics & materiality of industrial signage, the collaboration produced 3 works that refuse the assumed neutrality of legibility & universal language. Invoking large scale meme-poems in call & answer fashion, a friendship plays in the cadence of this way-finding gesture. Fallon Simard is an Anishinaabe artist & filmmaker from Couchiching First Nation, in Treaty #3 Territory. The work examines state violence perpetrated on Indigenous bodies within a context of colonialism. It looks at intersections of land, extraction, mental health & violence. jes sachse is a Toronto-based artist, writer, & curator. Often found marrying poetry with large-scale sculptural forms, the work addresses the negotiations of bodies moving in public/private space & the work of their care.
