Activity: Riverview Park and Zoo presents "Meet The Keeper" beginning at 1 p.m. at Riverview Park and Zoo (1230 Water St., Peterborough, K9H 7G4). Meet one of Riverview's Zoo Keepers each weekday in the summer! Learn about our snakes, tortoises, lemurs, bobcats and meerkats and what you can do to help with animal conservation. A different animal is featured each day of the week. Mondays and Fridays: Reptiles (meet at the barn); Tuesdays: Lemur (meet at Lemur exhibit); Wednesdays: Bobcat (meet at Bobcat exhibit); Thursdays: agouti (meet at back of Primate Building). Activity: Riverview Park and Zoo presents "Otter Feeding" beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Riverview Park and Zoo (1230 Water St., Peterborough, K9H 7G4). It's Otter feeding time! Come to the River Otter exhibit seven days a week. Meet a Riverview Park and Zoo keeper who will feed "Splish" and "Splash" (our two North American River Otters) their favourite afternoon snack, while answering your questions about the animals. Workshop: City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library presents Young Writers Workshops beginning at 6 p.m. at Fenelon Falls Library (19 Market St., Fenelon Falls, K0M 1N0). We are pleased to present a series of workshops for young writers which encourage children to write and illustrate their own books. The meetings will be held on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month commencing on February 7th, 2013. Workshops will focus on generating an idea, creating a story outline, writing the story, establishing the book layout, including illustrations and producing a completed book. Suitable for children aged 8 - 11 years, writing workshops help to elevate self-esteem and create a positive outlook on books and reading. More than 50 children have participated in the Library’s young writer workshops and have written and illustrated their own books. Many of these books are available in the Library and can be borrowed by other young library patrons. You can find them in the library online catalogue under the key words “you want to be a writer”. A similar workshop will be held in the spring at the Lindsay branch library – dates and time to be announced. Improvisation is acting without a script. Students will learn to create scenes on the spot using improv games, spontaneity and coaching from some of Canada’s top professional improvisers. WeeHands with Mary offers a 4-week "Sign & Sing at Home" baby sign language course on Tuesdays or Saturdays which teaches ASL signs and songs to help parents start signing with their baby or toddler. Family: Camp Kawartha presents "Mini-Kawartha Day" from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Camp Kawartha (1010 Birchview Rd, Lakefield, KOL 2H0). Here’s a chance to take a "quick dip," in the Camp Kawartha waters with a day long program that both campers and parents can enjoy. Parents can opt for dropping their children off in the morning, or join their children at camp for the day. Parents and campers will be given a tour of the camp and participate in some of the games and icebreakers we play on our first day. Campers then join a cabin group for morning activities while parents are led through a camp orientation – a crash course of everything they need to know about their child’s experience at Camp. Lunch and dinner will be provided in our dining hall where campers and parents participate and experience the dining hall spirit and routines unique to our camp. Parents and campers will participate in afternoon activities including our climbing wall, high ropes, eco, archery and boating activities. Later in the afternoon, campers will enjoy swimming or boating activities. We end the day with campfire songs, skits and surprises. Cost: $90/child/parent pair or $65/child age 5 and up. Bowmanville Zoo will be bringing a camel for the day, Ken Jens Petting Zoo will be here and the large bouncer slide is back and a new sticky wall to throw yourself against. Along with the BBQ favorites, try our French Fries or have a cold beer in the beer garden. Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is sponsoring an Art Appraisal Clinic – have your artifacts evaluated by experts. We then re-open at 7 p.m. for you to enjoy music by Terri and Rick to dance to or tap your feet while you enjoy a cold one. There is no admission charge however some activities charge a fee. Celebration: Apsley & District Lions Club presents Apsley's Canada Day Celebrations beginning at 4 p.m. at Apsley & District Lions Club (159 Wellington St. E., Apsley, K0L 1A0). Canada Day is coming. The parade will start at 4 p.m. at the school and go to the McFadden Road entrance of the Lions Park. We'd love to have lots of participants in the parade; everyone is welcome to put in a float. Kids are welcome to decorate their bikes and enter them. Lake Associations - put in a float and prove that your lake is the best one around′ After the parade, come over to the Lions Park for children's games, a watermelon eating contest, a bouncy castle, the Lions Food Booth and much more. Summer Camp: Camp Kawartha presents Summer Camps - Lakefield from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Camp Kawartha (1010 Birchview Rd, Lakefield, KOL 2H0). This hands-on, five-day program introduces younger campers to the joys of summer camp. Your child will participate in a variety of activities that will enhance their self confidence and create memories for a lifetime. Campers may participate in a range of activities that include arts and crafts, co-operative games, skill development activities, environmental based programs, recreation and adventure activities and water front activities. All day campers need to provide their own litterless, nut-free lunch including snacks for both of our morning and afternoon snack periods. Summer Camp: Peterborough Museum and Archives presents Youth Leadership Program (ages 14+) at Peterborough Museum and Archives (Museum Dr. at 300 Hunter St. E., Peterborough, K9J 6Y5). Want to volunteer as a Youth Leader at Summer Discovery and KinderKidz′ Seminars on leadership, first aid, team building and child development prepare you to volunteer with children ages 4 and up under the guidance of adult instructors in the award-winning Summer Discovery and KinderKidz programs. Training seminars take place the first week of July (dates TBA). Your volunteer Youth Leadership experience will be scheduled for any two weeks during July or August 2013. A fee is assessed to cover the cost of Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid Certification (TBA). Professional instruction, Summer Discovery t-shirt and programming resource guide are free of charge. Summer Camp: The Darkroom Project presents "Zoom" Photography Camp, Session 1, ages 10 - 14 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Gallery in the Attic (140-1/2 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, K9H 2K8). This camp is designed to explore and experiment with film photography. Participants will receive first hand experience using various cameras to capture images on film. Throughout the course, we will teach traditional photography printing in the darkroom, as well as alternative methods - some of which they would be able to recreate at home. At the end of each session, the youth will put together a professional level exhibit of their photographs for their families, friends, and general public at Gallery in the Attic. There will be 4 sessions offered throughout the summer. Each session is 9 days. Light snacks will be provided but participants are expected to provide their own bagged lunch each day. Registration fees cover the cost of photography supplies and related materials as well as a film camera and film to keep after the camp. Summer Camp: Camp Kawartha presents Summer Camps - Peterborough from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Camp Kawartha Environment Centre (2505 Pioneer Road, Peterborough, K9J 7B8). During this week of camp, kids will participate in active and engaging outdoor experiences. Campers will use the Environment Centre as a cozy home base from which to explore the Trent Nature Area. The focus of this camp is to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, create natural crafts, play fun & challenging games that develop sensory awareness and an appreciation of nature. Sample activities include; traditional skills (fire making, outdoor cooking, animal tracking, shelter building), nature based games and crafts, wetland investigations, swimming and timeless exploration in nature. Our experienced staff team creates a safe and supportive environment, encouraging kids’ natural curiosity, and creativity, while providing opportunities to make new friends. Youth Camp: Canadian Canoe Museum presents Summer Camp: "Paddling Camp - Level 2 & 3 and Solo" from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Peterborough Rowing Club (Nassau Mills Road, Peterborough, K9J 7H6). The advanced camp is for those looking to work longer and harder on their canoeing and leadership skills. Campers also move further afield on their daily canoe routes, where the Canoe Museum’s instructors teach ORCKA Basic Canoeing Level 2 & 3. For those who have already achieved Level 3, there will also be 5 or 6 spots for campers wanting to work towards their Level 4 solo certification. The Level 4 solo certification is a challenging level and asks that participants do everything that they learned in a tandem canoe from levels 1-3 in a solo canoe. We will do our best to teach everything in level 4 but it is likely that not all campers will achieve the full certification but they most certainly will finish the week with the abilities to safely and beautifully maneuver their canoe all by themselves. Summer Camp: The Darkroom Project presents "Zoom" Photography Camp, Session 3, ages 10 - 14 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Gallery in the Attic (140-1/2 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, K9H 2K8). This camp is designed to explore and experiment with film photography. Participants will receive first hand experience using various cameras to capture images on film. Youth Camp: Canadian Canoe Museum presents Summer Camp: "Tripping Camp" beginning at 9 a.m. at Canadian Canoe Museum (910 Monaghan Rd., Peterborough, K9J 5K4). This introduction to canoe tripping starts with trip preparation and safety skills at the Canadian Canoe Museum. For days 2-4 campers head to the beautiful Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park for a two-night wilderness canoe trip. This trip is a portaging and backcountry camping trip, so each night is spent at a different lake in the park. Campers will learn many skills on this trip including how to safely portage their own canoe, how to read topographic maps, safe fire making skills, backcountry cooking, some no-trace camping skills, keeping and staying dry with appropriate clothing, tarp set up, tent set up, water purification, canoeing through various waterbodies and how to enjoy and appreciate the wilderness and one's tripping partners. A strong emphasis will be placed on having fun with each other, cooperation, group building, and daily leadership activities.
