Led by their teacher Krista McEwen, the grade eight class at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough is trying to win an all-expense-paid trip to Quebec with their video about the Peterborough Lift Lock.

The trip is the grand prize in the “Canada’s Coolest Trip” contest from My Parks Pass, a joint initiative of Parks Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Historica Canada, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Nature Canada.

Contest participants are required to pick a Parks Canada place and create an informative and creative one-minute video as to why the extraordinary place is significant to Canadians. They have to describe the natural and/or cultural significance of the place.

Naturally, the Immaculate Conception class chose to make their video about the historic Peterborough Lift Lock.

The grand prize winner of the contest will get a five-day trip in June for the entire class and adult chaperones, with all expenses paid. Students will travel to the stunning La Mauricie National Park and to historic sites of Québec City, including Lévis Forts, the Fortifications, Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux, Montmorency Park, the Québec Garrison Club and Artillery Park Heritage Site.

They’ll participate in exciting activities including wildlife viewing and canoeing in La Mauricie National Park, living life as a soldier at Levis Forts National Historic Site, and dining as members of high society at the exclusive Quebec Garrison Club National Historic Site.

The public can vote on the videos until noon on Monday, March 30, 2015.

The 10 videos that have the most votes will be short-listed and then judged by a panel to determine the winners of the grand prize, as well as runner-up prizes and honourable mentions. Winners will be announced during the week of April 5th.

Of the 55 entries, Immaculate Conception is leading the voting as of March 30th, but the Grades 6-9 Social/Arts Education Class from Val Marie in Saskatchewan is close behind!

You can help ensure Immaculate Conception’s video makes the short-list by voting for it at the contest website. You’ll need to provide an email address to verify your vote, after which you can vote once per day.
