Significant rainfall, strong wind gusts, and hail possible this afternoon and evening

Severe thunderstorm

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch today (August 6) for all of the Kawarthas, including the City of Kawartha Lakes and the counties of Peterborough, Hastings, Haliburton, and Northumberland.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon over portions of southern Ontario. Some of these thunderstorms will have the potential to produce significant rainfall amounts as well as wind gusts to 90 km/h. Some hail is possible as well.

Additional thunderstorms may affect the area this evening and tonight as well.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
