After a delay of almost two months due to repairs, the miniature train ride at Riverview Park and Zoo in Peterborough is now open for the season.
The popular train ride, which features a miniature replica of an 1860 locomotive, runs for over two kilometres with a ride lasting around 10 minutes.
The normal Victoria Day long weekend opening of the train ride was delayed due to required repairs to the train tracks, which have now been completed.
Weather permitting, the train ride runs daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through to the end of the Labour Day long weekend in September.
With 10,000 to 60,000 riders each season, the miniature train ride is an important source of revenue for the Riverview Park and Zoo, which is Canada’s only free-admission accredited zoo.
In 2020, the zoo launched a fundraising campaign to raise $300,000 to replace the ride’s aging miniature locomotive by 2023. While the timeline was not met, the zoo did reach the $300,000 milestone earlier this year and is moving ahead with a request for proposals in September.
