At Peterborough city council's general committee meeting on May 4, 2026, a motion to defer Mayor Leal's motion to commit the city to financing $57 million of the cost of a proposed $170-million sport and event centre in downtown Peterborough failed 6-4, with councillor Alex Bierk absent from the meeting.
