Every month, kawarthaNOW is the only local media source to bring you a list of what’s coming to Netflix Canada. Here are a few highlights of what’s coming to Netflix in April.
In the reality series The Magic Prank Show with Justin Willman, the magician and comedian known for his Netflix series Magic For Humans uses his skills to pull off ambitious and hilarious pranks. With his team of professionals, Willman executes brain-bending experiences to help everyday folks blow people’s minds and settle old scores. The series debuts on Netflix on April Fool’s Day.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the psychological thriller series Ripley tells the story of a sociopathic grifter in early 1960s New York who is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy and convince his rich and spoiled playboy son to return home — leading Ripley into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.
Made into an Academy award-nominated film in 1999 starring Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood, the Netflix series stars Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn, and Dakota Fanning in the same roles. Presented in black and white, the eight-episode limited series premieres on Netflix on Thursday, April 4th.

The South Korean sci-fi series Parasyte: The Grey is a live-action adaptation of the manga series Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki, which depicts a confrontation with unidentified parasitic creatures that take over humans and force them to commit murder. The six-episode series comes to Netflix on Friday, April 5th.

Also debuting on April 5 is the British drama Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, and Rufus Sewell. The film is a fictional dramatization of how the women of the BBC Two news and current affairs Newsnight secured the infamous 2019 television interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with the American convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — an interview later described as “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.”

The documentary What Jennifer Did explores the real-life story of Jennifer Pan, a young Canadian woman living in Markham who lied about her achievements to her oppressive Vietnamese immigrant parents for 10 years before hiring hitmen to kill them in 2010. Directed by Jenny Popplewell, the documentary uses police interrogation footage and testimony from those involved to unravel a web of complexities that no one saw coming. It premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, April 10th.

The space opera film Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2023 Rebel Moon, which is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld whose ruthless military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. The sequel follows the rebel warriors as they gear up for battle against the forces of the Motherworld. Unlike the 2023 film, this one won’t be released in selected theatres in advance of its Netflix debut on Friday, April 19th.

Set in writer Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman universe, the supernatural comedy-drama Dead Boy Detectives is about two teenage ghosts (George Rexstrew as Edwin Payne and jayden Revri as Charles Rowland) who, rather than enter the afterlife, stay on Earth to become detectives. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson), they must work together to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases. Filmed in British Columbia, the eight-episode series comes to Netflix on Monday, April 25th.
