Fans of old-time country will be transported to the days of traveling troubadours when musical artist Petunia returns to The Garnet on Friday, June 8th (9:30pm/$10). The show will feature a set of original songs, and will feature a special tribute to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, two of his favourite all-time performers. Inspired by both, his reverence for Hank is especially clear: “Many of his songs are timeless to me and still resonate.”
‘Timeless’ is an excellent descriptor of Petunia’s performances as his voice soars, yodels, and occasionally growls with the conviction someone who has a long list of rich experiences. Petunia did not start out on stages, at least not a traditional stage, “I really cut my teeth on the street and those lessons and experiences are an integral part of every show” he explains while on tour in New Brunswick. These experiences add to his sincere hope that the audience will “feel changed in some way, like a thunderstorm over-taking the prairie.”
Meanwhile, his latest recording “Petunia and the Vipers” has been over-taking many record collections with its rockabilly, country, and western swing musical mix. It has been garnering great reviews and alongside excellent musicianship, features impressive technical credits, making it a special album to own on vinyl. The album took two years to complete, was recorded at a studio in Los Angeles by a three-time grammy award winner, and was mastered by Bernie Grundman, who worked on Tom Waits’ newest effort.
Many personal connections and friends make Peterborough a special place for Petunia to perform in and to visit. One of those connections is musician Sean Conway, who will be accompanying Petunia on stage playing electric guitar. Conway has played many shows with Petunia, and will be touring out West with him this summer.
The Garnet is located at 231 Hunter St. W., right beside The Night Kitchen. For more information about Petunia and the show check out http://www.petuniamusic.com or head down to The Garnet and enjoy their great food and beverages while you are there.
