April has finally brought the first signs of Spring and many chances to see excellent music in a variety of venues.

Here is just a taste of what’s heading our way this month.

Corb Lund and The Strumbellas at The Venue in Peterborough

Hurtin’ Albertan Corb Lund will be bringing his Spring Thaw 2014 Tour to The Venue (286 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-876-0008) on Saturday, April 12th, with doors open at 8 p.m. Check out one of Canada’s great country/roots artists in his prime.

Tickets are $31.50 and are available through The Venue Box Office or online at www.ticketmaster.ca. kawarthaNOW.com is also giving away free tickets (see sidebar).

A VIP package — which includes a pre-show acoustic performance and Q & A session, a photo with Corb, and more — is available from www.corblund.com.

The opening act will be The Strumbellas — who just won the Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year for their October 2013 release We Still Move On Dance Floors.

Garbageface, Animalia, Ratbaby, Stick & Poke, and Evangeline Gentle at The Spill in Peterborough

There will be an excellent night of “electro-vibes and acousti-fun” on everyone’s favourite day of pranks, April Fool’s Day.

That’s right, on Tuesday, April 1st at The Spill (414 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-748-6167) come check out “April Foolishness” with Garbageface, Animalia, Ratbaby, Stick & Poke, and Evangeline Gentle. This show will feature rap, electro tunes, heartfelt acoustic strummers, and more.

Tickets are available at the door, with a show time of 9:30 p.m.

MonkeyJunk at the Gordon Best in Peterborough and Frank’s Pasta & Grill in Cobourg

Award-winning blues comes to Peterborough with MonkeyJunk on Friday, April 4th at the beautiful Gordon Best Theatre, upstairs at The Only Cafe (216 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-876-8884) from 8-11pm.

MoneyJunk has won Junos, Maple Blues Awards, and — most importantly — the hearts over of fans across Canada. This will be an album release of their brand new record and is billed as a relatively “intimate show”.

Occam’s Blazer and Sarah Decarlo at The Spill in Peterborough

The Spill (414 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-748-6167) is the place to be for a great dance rock and upbeat roots music on Friday, April 11th at 10 p.m. as Occam’s Blazer and Sarah Decarlo team up.

Dance away the winter blues! Tickets are $5 to $10 at the door.

Coco Love Alcorn at The Spill in Peterborough

Canadian pop and jazz singer Coco Love Alcorn is returning to Peterborough on Tuesday, April 15th at The Spill (414 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-748-6167) beginning around 8 p.m.

Coco Love has changed her style a little over the years and will be playing a mix of pop and folk, along with cello player Sebastian Ostertag and a guest performance by Caitlin Currie.

The show is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Advance tickets are available at The Spill.

Petunia at The Garnet in Peterborough

One of Canada’s country and folk music treasures, Petunia, is coming back to town on Sunday, April 20th at 9 p.m. at The Garnet (231 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-874-8463). This will be one of the first shows when The Garnet reopens in April.

Petunia’s voice is unparalleled and ranges from sweet yodels to growls, all the while maintaining a rich smoothness. He is an artist not to be missed. Stunning tunes to be sure. Sean Conway will accompany him on electric guitar.

The Last Waltz at Academy Theatre in Lindsay

There will be a hot night of music in Lindsay at the Academy Theatre (2 Lindsay St. S., Lindsay, 705-324-9111) on Thursday, April 24th at 8 p.m. One of rock music’s best bands — The Band — will be celebrated in style with The Last Waltz.

Musicians include Levon Helm’s godson Jerome Levon Avis, Terry Blersh, Dennis Pinhorn, and many more. Special guests include Paul James, Jimmy Bowskill, and Johnny Max.

The Rocket Revue at Market Hall in Peterborough

Peterborough’s biggest rhythm and blues band are back in action at The Market Hall (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough) on Saturday, April 26th at 8 p.m.

The Rocket Revue have consistently delivered great swing, blues, and rock and roll music. The 12-member group features a full horn section, alongside some of Peterborough’s most notable names in music, including Brent Bailey, Al Black, Buzz Thompson, Andy Pryde, Gary Peeples, and more! Joining the Revue for this show will be guest vocalists Bridget Foley and Jane Archer.

Tickets are $27 for general admission advanced tickets, while premium seats are $32 (the cost at the door is also $32). 2014 Wire Awards at Market Hall in Peterborough

If you still have some energy after dancing all night to The Rocket Revue, then head back to The Market Hall (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough) the next night for a celebration of “music, media, and the hospitality industry”.

The 2014 Wire Awards take place on Sunday, April 27th at 7 p.m., with pre-show cocktails from 5 to 7 p.m. Hosted by Michael Bell and Michelle Ferreri, the event will feature live performances by Mokomokai, The Crux, The Lohrwoods, Sue Newberry & The Law, and more.
