In a city like Peterborough, where so much musical talent abounds, it’s no wonder musicians are asked to donate their talents and time so often for great causes. A live music benefit can bring the community together and rally attention and support in a unique way.
The late great Peterborough musician and generous soul Phil “Mr. Deluxe” Marshall knew all about this. He had a dream to help worthy causes with the healing power of music, and to aid musicians themselves in times of need.
Over the past few years, Phil was able to make these dreams a reality by hosting regular benefit concerts at The Pig’s Ear Tavern and by forming an association dedicated to helping musicians in need — the Peterborough Musicians Benevolent Association (PMBA).
The Blues Jam, which was held on the third Saturday of each month at The Pig’s Ear Tavern in downtown Peterborough, was very close to Phil’s heart.
In addition to helping musicians in need, the Blues Jams helped raise funds for local community causes, such as “Operation Catnip” (an effort to spay and neuter feral cats), Philippine Typhoon relief, the Survivors Abreast Dragon Boat Race team, the Peterborough County-City Health Unit Dental Program for low-income earners, assorted benefits for loyal blues fans with health issues, and mush more.
One of the reasons Phil started the PMBA was as “a way to give back to musicians who needed a hand”. When he died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 61 last December, he left a legacy that represented his respect and admiration for the Peterborough and area musical community.
Local musician and downtown business owner Alan Black first met Phil in the mid ’90s. Phil was hosting a blues jam at Crackerjacks in Lindsay, and ended up moving to Peterborough and hosting many jams and fundraisers.“Phil always wanted to start a fund in the tradition of the New Orleans social clubs to help musicians in need,” Al says.
After Phil’s death, the ball started rolling.
“With a modest amount of money that he left, we started the Peterborough Musicians Benevolent Association,” Al explains. “We’ve been able to help two local musicians from that fund and hope to help more.”
There’s a four-person board dedicated to managing the funds and dispersing them appropriately when needs arise.
On Saturday, June 28th, there’ll be a big fundraiser for the PMBA at The Pig’s Ear Tavern (144 Brock, Peterborough, 705-745-7255).
“The First Annual Phil Marshall Birthday Bash” will feature The Rocket Revue, The Victory Boys, Balls and Jane, The Bluestones, and Mayhemingways — there are many more band announcements to come.
The fundraiser will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. There’ll be a cover charge of $10, with all proceeds going to the PMBA.
This event will bring attention to a great cause as well as celebrate the generous nature of Phil Marshall. Make sure to head out to this fundraiser on June 28th and take in some excellent music, learn more about the PMBA, and share your memories of Mr. Deluxe.
