The co-founder of the Peterborough Pet Food Bank has issued a plea for donations. Kathi Curtin-Williams says the pet food bank needs both dry and wet pet food, cat supplies, and food for other animals including rabbits, hamsters, and birds.
One of only three pet food banks in the Kawarthas, the Peterborough Pet Food Bank is non-profit organization run by volunteers to aid pet owners in need. Since it opened in October 2013, the pet food bank has fed almost 14,000 pets with food collected through individual donations and food drives.
The pet food bank provides people with temporary assistance so they don’t have to give up their pets. Clients include people with disabilities, seniors on fixed incomes, victims of layoffs, and single-parent families, as well as others who face an unexpected medical expense or car repair, high hydro bill, or other expenses that make it challenging to purchase food for their pets.
“There are a lot of people struggling with the high cost of living,” Kathi says.
She also points out that supplies at the pet food bank decrease during the summer months.
“Schools are closed, churches slow down, people are busy with vacations, and donations slow to a trickle,” she explains.
If you have pet food to donate, you can bring donations directly to the Peterborough Pet Food Bank on Fridays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The pet food bank operates out of St. John’s Anglican Church at 99 Brock St. in Peterborough.
