Music lovers have a great opportunity to enjoy some excellent songwriting and musicianship on Thursday, July 18th at The Garnet in downtown Peterborough.
Newfoundland’s Matthew Hornell, now living in Halifax, celebrates the Peterborough release of his second full-length album “Have It All”.
Well-known music blog North By East West describes an evening with him: “Hornell has an energetic radiance that fills the largest of rooms and warms the coldest of hearts. It would be a challenge to find anyone in the audience who isn’t smiling.”
Matthew writes songs with a strong sentimentality: stories of his ancestors, lovers, friends, and his own joy and challenges.
Each note and lyric on “Have It All” — and his first album “Matthew Hornell and the Diamond Mines” — speak loudly and clearly that Matthew is a craftsman, not just an artist.
His songs wind and turn from stirring ballads to uptempo shuffles and back again with a grace not easily captured by every songwriter.
His current summer tour began in Halifax, continues all across Newfoundland, and eventually heads west through New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario. He lands in Peterborough on July 18th.
Along with Matthew will be two excellent musicians in their own right: Andrew Sneddon from the brilliantly talented Halifax band The Modern Grass will play slide guitar, while Matthew Gallant will play percussion.
Peterborough’s own Mayhemingways will be opening the show with a fun mix of alt-country, old country, and Cajun musical stylings.
The show begins around 10 p.m. and costs $7 or pay what you can.
