kawarthaCHOW – It’s Turkey Time

Follow Elaine’s simple rules to make Turkey Time stress-free!

Being married to a chef and being a not bad cook myself, around this time of the year our phone starts to ring.

It starts off with a little chit chat and then, out of nowhere, our friends will ask “So I’m having Thanksgiving this year, what do you suggest?” or, my favourite, “I have this bird in my sink, what should I do?”

Del Mastro Votes With 2000-Year-Old Values

It’s been a tough year for Dean Del Mastro, largely because he spent most of it with his foot in his mouth. Luckily for him, the public venom seems to have lost strength since Parliament Hill returned from summer vacation, which may be because MP Del Mastro has been largely silent — until Thursday that is.

This week, a private member’s bill was tabled with the intention to create a government committee to review the Criminal Code of Canada’s definition of when a child’s life begins. Not a big deal, right? Well, it’s bigger than you may think.

Lisa Besseling’s trip to Norway was supposed to be a holiday.

“I went to visit a friend living there who designs sets for television commercials. She was working on a project and I ended up on the set every day — pressing linens, moving furniture, whatever was needed. It wasn’t the vacation I had envisioned,” she says with a smile. “But it gave me the opportunity to explore the Norwegian design aesthetic. I fell in love with the simplicity and functionality of their work.”

Earthy, elegant and uncomplicated. These are words that not only best reflect the interior and furnishings at Besseling’s store and design loft, Stony Lake Furniture Co. in Lakefield, they are fitting descriptives for the vibrant and lovely entrepreneur whose background in design, space planning, cabinetry and furnishings have brought her tremendous success — and she only just turned 30.

Silvia Ferreri Saraceni

Silvia Ferrerri's mural at St. Paul's school

When you decided to volunteer your time to paint a mural at St. Paul’s, did you have any idea how large of an impact it would have on the school?

“The staff and parents of St. Paul’s wanted to freshen up the library and I’ve painted murals at other schools. I started out painting one wall in the corner of the library. Every day while I was working, the kids would come in and ask me questions about what I was drawing and painting.

“People still call me that,” laughs Austin, the owner of Chasing the Cheese, an intimate boutique-inspired shop that sells up to 250 different kinds of organic and artisan cheese.

Peterborough’s Downtown Square & The Disconnected Process

Peterborough has taken another step towards getting a town square. After months of debate, our city council finally came to an agreement that yes, in fact, the Louis Street parking lot was the best choice for a downtown square. Ultimately, the downtown core won.

Crime and Punishment

If I were to poll a thousand Peterborough residents on whether they’d feel safe walking through our downtown core at 10:00pm on a Saturday night, I’m guessing a large percentage would say no. They’d likely reference high drug use, frequent assaults and thefts for their distrust of the downtown core.
