The Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit in Fenelon Falls was honoured at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with a Film Circuit Achievement Award.

The TIFF Film Circuit is the film festival’s outreach program to bring the best of Canadian and international film to communities across the country.

Every year, member communities of the TIFF Film Circuit gather together at a conference to network, share ideas, and preview new feature films for their local audiences at home. During this year’s conference, held at TIFF in Toronto from September 18th to 20th, the program handed out its first-ever Film Circuit Achievement Awards.

The Kawartha Lakes Film Circuit (KLFC) received the award for Best Special Event. Kathryn Rogers, Chair of KLFC, accepted the award on behalf of KLFC and Films by the Falls.

Films by the Falls is a film series in Fenelon Falls launched last year by KLFC, a group of volunteers living in and near Fenelon Falls who want to share their passion for movies by bringing local residents the opportunity to experience the world through film.

The award was in honour of the first anniversary event for Films by the Falls, held at Fenelon Falls Secondary School in March.

The celebration included a themed party in honour of the group’s March film “Land Ho!”, a buddy comedy/adventure movie set primarily in Iceland. TIFF applauded organizers of the event for creating an incredibly detailed celebration from available resources.

Organizers treated film viewers to bunches of balloons in Icelandic colours, traditional appetizers of Iceland prepared by Fenelon Falls Secondary School’s hospitality students, and a history lesson from local author Guy Scott (who spoke about the history of Icelandic settlers in the Kawarthas).

“Thanks to our sponsors, audience members, Fenelon Falls Secondary School and our dedicated group of volunteer organizers for your support,” Kathryn says. “We could not have done it without you!”

Films by the Falls (www.filmsbythefalls.com) screens movies on the last Tuesday of each month. The fall season runs from September to November 2015 and the winter/spring season runs from January to May 2016.

The next film is I’ll See You In My Dreams, which plays on October 27th at Fenelon Falls Secondary School (66 Lindsay St., Fenelon Falls). Tickets are $10, available in advance at Sweet Bottoms Coffee (19 Colborne St., Fenelon Falls) or at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the main feature screening at 7:30 p.m.
