musicNOW – October 2014

Jackson Delta performing at Showplace Peterborough during the "Rick Fines and Friends" concert in 2012. Rick Fines, Alan Black, and Gary Peeples are reuniting as Jackson Delta for a one-night-only show at Peterborough's Market Hall on Friday, October 17th

Here are my picks for some of the great shows coming up in October (this month, all my picks are in Peterborough). Our community is lucky to have such a rich musical backdrop, so get out there and support live music!

Art in the Street – October 2014

While work continues on repairing one of its walls, the Art Gallery of Peterborough (AGP) remains open with the Selections Exhibition from this past weekend’s 30th Annual Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour on display until October 19th.

Uneasy Quietness – A review of The Curious Savage

Linda Driscoll as Mrs. Ethel Savage and Sharon Gildea as Miss Wilhelmina in The Curious Savage

There’s a feeling of uneasy quietness that surrounds the Peterborough Theatre Guild’s production of John Patrick’s The Curious Savage. Directed by Glen Walker, the drama — which looks at the juxtaposition of morality and kindness between mental patients and pillars of society — has a sleepy quality that numbs the audience into a sort of claustrophobic state.

Campaign Equality

This week, famous actor Emma Watson gave an emotional speech before the United Nations in order to introduce a new campaign called “HeForShe“. This campaign is aimed towards getting men involved in stopping violence against women. She rightfully pointed out that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, but everyone’s. I agree wholeheartedly with Ms Watson on this subject, but I think the issue goes deeper than most give credit.

Singing for Showplace

Canadian singing duo Christopher Dallo and Brian Roman are performing at "The Big Night" at Showplace in Peterborough on October 9

Before every performance, singers Brian Roman and Christopher Dallo walk into the audience to shake hands and thank people for coming to their show.

“It doesn’t matter where we are or who we are performing for,” Brian says. “Every show is an intimate expression of what we both love to do.”

Peterborough and The Kawarthas Cycling Summit & Youth Bike Summit

Register for the Peterborough and Kawarthas Cycling Summit and Youth Bike Summit by visiting p-bac.org. The summit takes place on Saturday, October 4th and is absolutely free.

While working outside on Sunday, a group of cyclists passed by and, like me, were clearly taking advantage of one of the last warm days before fall sets in.

Our region is fast becoming known as a cycling destination.

Does an experience define you, or do you define the experience? In the case of the inspiringly adaptable Cheryl Strayed, it’s one then the other.

After 25 years in business, Parkhill on Hunter closed its doors on Monday, September 29th.

The current owner, Emma Cox, began working at Parkhill as a server over 12 years ago and then purchased the business in 2010. After operating the restaurant for the past four years, Cox says she will be transitioning her focus, skill and experience to a new catering and event planning business, called EC Catering.

Multimedia Spectacular – A review of Hedwig and The Angry Inch

A decade before Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball there was the amazing Hedwig and the Angry Inch, John Cameron Mitchell’s and Stephen Trask’s outrageous and colourful musical about an East German transgendered glam-rock singer.

Would it still be cottage country without the loon?

According to Audubon's Birds and Climate Change Report, the common loon may disappear from its traditional territory by the end of this century as a result of global warming (photo: Kirk Doughty)

Two reports released in mid-September 2014 remind us that big changes are coming to Ontario’s lakes and rivers.

First: Audubon’s Birds and Climate Change Report suggests that within this century, “the call of the loon may disappear” from its traditional territory as a result of global warming.
