Healthy Eating Alternatives

Vegan raw food quiche with nut filling and vegetables on top

We all grew up learning the rules of healthy eating based on the four food groups: fruits and vegetables, grain products, milk products, and meat products.

The Canada Food Guide went so far as to outline how much we should consume from each group depending on our age.

One of Peterborough’s most prolific and talented artists, Beau Dixon has music and theatre in his soul — they are the passions that define him.

In his early days, Beau was all about music. While he struggled with a love-hate relationship with theatre, he found the audition process terrifying and was defeated by rejection.

A Casino in Peterborough?

Do the benefits of a casino outweigh the drawbacks?

What would you call a casino in Peterborough?

Casino Peterborough? Casino By The Lake?

Women of Impact

More than 100 women have been nominated as Women of Impact in conjunction with the Red Pashmina Campaign, dedicated to advancing education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families.

These outstanding women of influence have made a difference in the lives of others through their strength in action, compassion in attitude, and fortitude in spirit.

And The Oscar Should Go To …

Elliott Burton's favourite films and performances of the year

Another year, another crop of uninspired Academy Award Nominees.

To say that the Academy draws almost strictly from what Hollywood has crafted for it is hardly a revelation, but this remains a source of potent frustration for audiences that recognize that not all mainstream films play by these rules.

An award-worthy film need not always contain trendy American politics or a cloying starlet’s shorn locks.

My favourite films and performances of the year celebrate fantastical tradition and cultural preservation — two qualities that the Academy should hold in extremely high regard.

While I’ve never met her before, it was fairly easy to spot Ashley Brzozowicz waiting for her cappuccino in the long line of people at Black Honey Desserts. Blonde and statuesque, Brzozowicz epitomizes the physicality of an Olympic athlete, yet her demeanor is calm and gentle.

“I’m really excited to be living in Peterborough,” she says softly in between sips from her steaming mug of coffee. “There are so many beautiful trails surrounding the city. I’m really enjoying my time here.”

Having recently moved from her training centre in London Ontario while her husband Roy Dyskstra pursues a PhD at Trent University’s Traill College, Brzozowicz says she’s learning new and amazing things about this city every day.

There’s nothing Emma Cox loves more than sharing her love of food with the people around her.

“I love to host and entertain people,” Emma states. “My greatest joy in life is sharing food with people — and watching them enjoy it.”

The most romantic time of the year is upon us.

Valentine’s Day is a time to remind that special someone how much you care. One of the best ways to do that is to put yourself out there and let it all show!

For some, this might involve writing a poem or song or sending flowers. For others, it might mean cooking a fantastic meal for the other person who is always the cook.

Shoppers Drug Mart vs. Peterborough

Shoppers Drug Mart has locations with buildings matching neighbourhood aesthetics and with rear parking, like this store in Aylmer. (Photo: Google Street View)

It’s a tough job being a councillor in Peterborough these days.

Every little decision has started to become mainstream media and, as a voter, I find it quite refreshing.

A big decision that has been making the rounds in local media over the last few weeks has been the proposed site plan for a new Shoppers Drug Mart store in the downtown core.
