This is the final weekend that the Art Gallery of Peterborough will be located at its temporary home at 420 George Street North in downtown Peterborough.

The gallery will then close to the public from Monday, July 20th to Friday, August 7th, to prepare for the reopening at its permanent location at 250 Crescent Street.

There’ll be an open house this weekend at the temporary location, located on the third floor of 420 George Street North, coinciding with the Peterborough Pulse “open streets” event on Saturday, July 18th.

The gallery will be offering lemonade and art activities on Saturday, as well as 30% off at the Gallery Shop until closing on Sunday, July 19th. Sunday will also be the final day to see the “Odd One Out” exhibition by Roula Partheniou.

The lemonade the gallery is offering during its open house on Saturday refers to “making lemons into lemonade” — something the gallery did as a result of the temporary closure.

The gallery closed its Crescent Street location back in March so that upgrades to the heating and air conditioning system could be completed. The upgrades were required to maintain the controlled environmental standards of an art gallery.

However, the upgrade meant that gallery needed to empty the vault where its permanent collection is stored. The vault had become crowded and disorganized over the years, and the gallery saw this as an opportunity to not only upgrade the vault — completing a thorough cleaning, removing asbestos floor tiles, and repainting and sealing floors and walls — but also to reorganize the collection, update records, and make better use of the space with new art storage systems.

Because of the upgrades, the gallery needed to empty its artwork vault and temporarily relocate its permanent location. The gallery "turned lemons into lemonade" by using it as opportunity to upgrade the vault and reorganize the collection.

The gallery reopens to the public at the renovated Crescent Street location on Saturday, August 8th. Although full gallery exhibitions won’t return until September, the gallery will have an exhibition for the Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour during August and the Gallery Shop will be open.

In addition, you can visit the gallery during August to observe the return of the permanent collection. The gallery will be offering vault tours at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoons (August 14, 21, and 28). The gallery will also be hosting its annual open house on Friday August 28th.
