The joyful sounds of “Do You Love Me” by The Contours seep from a rehearsal room in the basement of George St. United Church, where the Peterborough Pop Ensemble assembles to make great music.

“Music is kind of like food for your soul,” the group’s business manager Susan Dunkley tells me. “It gets you going.”

Revisiting the golden age of radio

Trent Radio has been producing original live radio dramas supported by a grant by Community Radio Fund of Canada. Like this NBC live radio play broadcast from the 1920s, most early radio programs were broadcast live because recording technology was primitive and expensive.

Founded and operated by the students of Trent University, Trent Radio (92.7 CFFF FM) has a long-standing tradition of producing original radio dramas at their broadcast facility at the corner of George and Parkhill in Peterborough.

“Radio drama is quite an active artistic medium,” says Programme Director James Kerr. “And it’s a lot of fun.”

The most common offenders seem to be disposable coffee cups and fast food bags, but I’ve seen everything from personal care products to lingerie littering the roads.
