So you’ve been in business sometime now and things are going well. You’ve established a customer base and you’re now experiencing the culture of repeat business.

You’ve done well and your business is healthy. You’ve worked hard to get this far, and you’re confident and assured of success. Great job!

Peterborough Theatre Guild production wins top drama awards

Alex Saul, Jerry Allen, producer Jill Adams, and Scott Drummond at the Eastern Ontario Drama League's 2014 Awards Banquet in Wellington on April 6, 2014

I’ve called The Beauty Queen of Leenane the best drama I’ve seen this year.

It seems that I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Originally staged at the Peterborough Theatre Guild this past winter, director Jerry Allen’s production of the Martin McDonagh dark comedy took home some of the top awards at the Eastern Ontario Drama League’s 2014 Full Length Festival in April.

KNosh News – May 2014

Bualai Taste of Thai Restaurant

As the doors close on Saporito Italian Restaurant, one of Peterborough’s favourite dining spots, we wish Jim Glasser all the best in his future endeavours. But you know what they say — when one door closes, another one opens.

Giving the devil her due

Thirty years ago, actor and playwright Wyatt Lamoureux had an idea.

Attending theatre school at the time, Wyatt wondered ‘What if William Shakespeare was sitting in purgatory somewhere, completely aware of his iconic status on earth and being tormented by being unable to participate in his fame while his works are handled, or more likely mishandled, by the living?’

The idea became a solo project, but other projects (and life) got in the way of Wyatt’s personal discourse on Shakespeare’s influence on our culture. While the project got skirted to the wayside, once in a while these thoughts about Shakespeare would come back into Wyatt’s mind.

Now, after decades of rewrites and a handful of misstarts, Wyatt is finally ready to share his unique character study of William Shakespeare in his new one-act play Shakespeare vs. the Merchants of Venom.

Honouring the resilience of family at the Nexicom James Fund Golf Classic

The Nexicom James Fund Golf Classic is one of those rare charitable events that connects with deep emotion and allows people to dig into the reserves of affection we hold so close for family.

There are countless wonderful causes worthy of community support but the Peterborough golf tournament that honours the tenacious courage and eerie wisdom of James Birrell (who died at the age of eight in 2001 after struggling against neuroblastoma) is counted as one of the finest.

kawarthaICON – Melissa Payne

Mark my words: Ennismore’s Melissa Payne will be a household name in Canadian music in the coming years.

She already has the comfortable stage presence and raspy, well-developed voice of a seasoned musician beyond her years. Now her songs are reaching the next level as well.

Please, sir, I want some more

The talented cast of the Peterborough Theatre Guild's production of "Oliver!", which runs from May 2-10 at Showplace in Peterborough

I may have gone into the preview night of the Peterborough Theatre Guild’s production of Oliver! a bit biased.

I have a certain soft spot for the musical because when I was a child of eight, my elementary school put on the play — making it the first real piece of theatre I had ever seen.

Art in the Street – May 2014

"Budapest Chain Bridge". The level of mastery in conveying perspective Dianne Latchford has already reached is striking. See her exhibit at Black Honey in Peterborough from May 12 - June 30.

It’s a tremendous challenge to define our identity — something that most of us wrestle with throughout our lives. Nevertheless, it’s an almost daily activity to define ourselves to others in some way.

As an accomplished Canadian actor, Dianne Latchford is more familiar than most with the warp and weft of these definitions.

Coco Chanel and Giorgio Armani eat your hearts out. You may have reached the status of all-time fashion icons, but have you ever managed to create a stunning dress out of hardware supplies, or pennies? No … we didn’t think so.

These are just a couple of the imaginative pieces that have featured in past Wearable Art Shows. Other dazzling creations have included a black-light-emblazoned suit made of paper, a surgical bandage ballerina outfit, and a spritely ensemble crowned with an incredible chapeau made of plants and flowers.

Possibly the perfect outing for you and your Mom on her special weekend, the now perennially popular event also features The Runway Challenge.

Six artists/designers are matched up with six local businesses and challenged to create a stunning work of sartorial genius to be strutted down the catwalk at Market Hall.
