On the road with Mayhemingways: Peterborough to the East Coast

Mayhemingways in Newfoundland: the view from the deck at The Cat Stop, a bar in Norris Point, Newfoundland. The boat on the right is the water taxi that takes folks between Norris Point and Woody Point.

I am one half of Mayhemingways — a Peterborough-based fuzz-folk alt-country duo with elements of bluegrass, old-time, and Cajun music. Until late July, my bandmate Benj Rowland and I have embarked on a cross-Canada tour from Peterborough to St. John’s to B.C.. My mission with this bi-weekly column is to give you a window of what it’s like to tour our fair country, with stories and happenings from the road.

Art on the Street – June 2016

Walk, run, hike, or cycle trails in the Kawarthas this Saturday

Cyclists, hikers, and dog walkers enjoy the Trans Canada Trail that winds through GreenUP Ecology Park in the city of Peterborough. Following the trail north, it links with Roger’s Cove and Beavermead Park, and connects to both the Rotary Greenway Trail in East City and the Parkway Trail via Jackson Park. Following in the other direction, the trail extends into Peterborough County, with routes to Wallace Point and Keene. (Photo: Karen Halley, GreenUp)

The region we live, work, and play in is rich with opportunities for outdoor recreation and alternative transportation routes.

This Saturday, June 4th is International Trails Day, and communities throughout the region are encouraging residents to walk, run, hike, and cycle the well-developed trail systems that Peterborough City and County have to offer.

One afternoon in 2014, I was invited to The Theatre on King (TTOK) in Peterborough as part of a small audience to watch a show called The Blind Eye being workshopped by Mysterious Entity Theatre. I remember at the time being enthusiastic about the eerie production filled with drama and mysticism, and later wrote that my only wish was to see more.
