Paying it forward at Peterborough’s Speak Easy Cafe

Everyone by now has heard about the “One for James” social media campaign that went viral earlier this week, but many people don’t know about a pay-it-forward program that the Speak Easy Cafe in downtown Peterborough has been running for the past year.
Through the Looking Glass Darkly – a review of Ruse of the Romantic

Much has been written about Lewis Carroll and his most famous piece of literature, Alice in Wonderland, over the decades. From feature films to comic books to video games, it has been reexamined, rebooted, and reimagined so often that it seems like there’s nothing new to say.
Upstaging Shakespeare

After last Saturday’s performance of New Stages’ production Taking Shakespeare at Peterborough’s Market Hall, a couple of audience members stole the limelight — but in a way The Bard himself would have approved.
Celebrate your favourite trails during International Trails Week

We’re incredibly fortunate to have hundreds of kilometres of trails winding their way through our region, allowing for biking, walking and a variety of other uses. Not only do trails connect communities, but they also allow people to get out and about and become more physically active.
It’s these trails that are being feted as part of International Trails Week, which runs from Monday, June 1st to Saturday, June 6th.
Men walking tall in high heels to support women and children

On Friday, May 29th, men of all ages will slip on red high heel shoes and walk a mile through downtown Peterborough in a show of support for women and children facing violence in our community.
The annual “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event, an awareness fundraiser for YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, begins at 12 p.m. in front of Peterborough City Hall.
Trent student card now accepted at three downtown merchants

Trent University and the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) have entered into a new partnership that will allow the Trent student card to be used at Black Honey, Natas Café, and The Whistle Stop in downtown Peterborough.
Dancing in the streets

There’s a new open streets event taking place in downtown Peterborough this summer called “Peterborough Pulse”.
The event — which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18th — will see sections of George Street, Crescent Street, and Lock Street temporarily closed to motor vehicles.
Instead of cars, the streets will be filled with families pushing strollers, dog-walkers, cyclists, and roller skaters. There’ll be sidewalk sales, community activities, public art, and more.
Art you can sit on

If you want the chance to own an original piece of “chair art”, you’ll want to attend the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival’s Chair Affair auction on Thursday, May 28th at the Market Hall in Peterborough.
Twenty local artists have donated their time and talent to take broken and unwanted chairs and transform them into one-of-a-kind works of art.
The play’s the thing – a review of Taking Shakespeare

After a long winter of musical theatre, director Randy Read ushers in Peterborough’s summer theatrical season with the New Stages production of John Murrell’s Taking Shakespeare at the Market Hall from May 22nd to May 30th.
