There’s a wide variety of music to be seen and heard during June in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. What better way to celebrate the season than getting out to see some live entertainment? Here are my picks for shows you should check out in June.

Paying it forward at Peterborough’s Speak Easy Cafe

In the Suspended Meal Program at Peterborough's Speak Easy Cafe, customers can donate $5 for a food item of $1.75 for a beverage that can then be redeemed by a person in need

Everyone by now has heard about the “One for James” social media campaign that went viral earlier this week, but many people don’t know about a pay-it-forward program that the Speak Easy Cafe in downtown Peterborough has been running for the past year.

Through the Looking Glass Darkly – a review of Ruse of the Romantic

Much has been written about Lewis Carroll and his most famous piece of literature, Alice in Wonderland, over the decades. From feature films to comic books to video games, it has been reexamined, rebooted, and reimagined so often that it seems like there’s nothing new to say.

Upstaging Shakespeare

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" Love blossomed on stage after the performance of New Stages' Taking Shakespeare on Saturday, May 23rd at Peterborough's Market Hall

After last Saturday’s performance of New Stages’ production Taking Shakespeare at Peterborough’s Market Hall, a couple of audience members stole the limelight — but in a way The Bard himself would have approved.

Celebrate your favourite trails during International Trails Week

There are hundreds of kilometres of trails throughout the Kawarthas, including the Trans Canada Trail (pictured here near Jackson Park in Peterborough). We’re incredibly fortunate to have hundreds of kilometres of trails winding their way through our region, allowing for biking, walking and a variety of other uses. Not only do trails connect communities, but they also allow people to get out and about and become more physically active.

It’s these trails that are being feted as part of International Trails Week, which runs from Monday, June 1st to Saturday, June 6th.

Men walking tall in high heels to support women and children

Trent Valley Honda "Walk A Mile In Her Shoes" takes place on May 29 in downtown Peterborough. Since 2009, more than 1,500 men have raised over $375,000 in support of YWCA Crossroads Shelter and the many YWCA services for women building lives free of violence.

On Friday, May 29th, men of all ages will slip on red high heel shoes and walk a mile through downtown Peterborough in a show of support for women and children facing violence in our community.

The annual “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event, an awareness fundraiser for YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, begins at 12 p.m. in front of Peterborough City Hall.

Dancing in the streets

Taking place on Saturday, July 18th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Peterborough Pulse will close some downtown streets to motor vehicles and open them for the use of pedestrians, cyclists, roller skaters, and more. There'll be sidewalk sales, community activities, public art, and more.

There’s a new open streets event taking place in downtown Peterborough this summer called “Peterborough Pulse”.

The event — which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18th — will see sections of George Street, Crescent Street, and Lock Street temporarily closed to motor vehicles.

Instead of cars, the streets will be filled with families pushing strollers, dog-walkers, cyclists, and roller skaters. There’ll be sidewalk sales, community activities, public art, and more.

Art you can sit on

Local artists have transformed unwanted chairs into original works of art that will be auctioned off on May 28 in support of the Buckhorn Community Centre

If you want the chance to own an original piece of “chair art”, you’ll want to attend the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival’s Chair Affair auction on Thursday, May 28th at the Market Hall in Peterborough.

Twenty local artists have donated their time and talent to take broken and unwanted chairs and transform them into one-of-a-kind works of art.
