Burger titans strengthen reign with new location

Burger titans Apollo Grill have set their sights on world domination as they expand their reign from the west end of the city to downtown Peterborough.

The restaurant will be located in the building at the corner of Hunter and George Streets — the location of Uptown Silk Shoppe for more than 70 years (and, most recently, Uptown Music).

Property owner Rennie Lowes of Exit Realty and esteemed architect Ken Trevelyan are currently restoring the building to its original state of architectural splendour.

“It’s a spectacular heritage building located at one of the busiest corners of our downtown,” says Apollo Grill owner Dan Rennick.

Famous for their classic old-school burgers, fries and shakes, Apollo Grill is excited to move into the new location in the fall of 2013.

It’s a Small World

Now that Peterborough’s Festival of Trees has come to an end, the Peterborough Health Services Foundation is a little “short” on funds.

You can help by joining hosts Erica Cherney and Dr. Tom Phillips at a unique event that celebrates all the good things that come in small packages — including small business, short fiction, compact cars and, yes, a darn good haiku!

“Tom and I decided it was time to put our height to good use and have a charity event to celebrate people who are smaller — less than — 5 feet, 2 inches,” says Erica. “Being not-so-tall needs to be celebrated.”

“We hope people of all heights will join us, even tall people,” she jokes. “It’s a great chance for them to see how the other half lives.”

The sculptural artwork of artist Tedd Hucks is likely little known, as Tedd is mostly known for his tattoo work. His visual art literally lives on many residents of Peterborough and the world.

August is here.

That means there’s one month left until school starts and we all want to savour these last precious days of summer.

For many of us, that means cramming everyone into the family vehicle (carving out a space for the dog) and heading out camping.

An Homage to Judy Heffernan

I can’t remember being with Judy Heffernan and not feeling completely enveloped in her warmth.

Whether it was an embrace, her infectious laughter or rock-solid demeanour, Judy always made you feel secure, honoured, and loved.

Recorded in Toronto during a cold slushy week in April, Kelly McMichael’s brand new EP Liminal is being released in the midst of summer — and the sound suits the season perfectly.

The five-song album has a pop-rock flair with sensibilities of ’90s femme-rock and a touch of ’80s synth tones.
