Tired of seeing your media releases going nowhere?

Writing a media release? Guest writer Jane Carthew Davidson provides seven do's and don'ts if you want to get the attention of the media.

People are often confused about what a media release actually is, and what it isn’t. For starters, a media release is not a speech, not a rant, and most importantly, not an ad in disguise.

Age of Excess – a review of Avengers: Age of Ultron

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the team of superheroes battles a malevolent artificial intelligence known as Ultron

There are few categories of fans more obsessively loyal than the avid comic book reader. Superhero comics have always struck a chord with outsiders as they glamorize and empower people who struggle in mainstream society.

Documenting Peterborough’s musical history

Trent Radio is seeking biographical and other supporting information about local musicians with recordings in the Local Content Archive project. The archive includes well-known musicians like Rick Fines and Ken Ramsden (pictured here from Trent Radio's March 2000 Live Music Day), as well as more obscure artists. Peterborough loves its musicians and has a long and colourful musical history. In recent months, films and book projects have been released or announced that chronicle niches of our community’s relationship with music. But at Trent Radio, a special project preserving Peterborough’s musical past has been a passion for a group of employees and volunteers for over a decade.

Purr-fect – a review of Cats

My love for cats often precedes me. Quite frankly, I like cats much more than I even like humans. So, it was with great anticipation that I attended the opening gala of The Peterborough Theatre Guild’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

Art in the Street – May 2015

“Still Ice” by Wendy Trusler at Evans Contemporary

Ideas about life in Antarctica remain frozen in our collective memory. We imagine endless snow, icebergs, penguins, and an unremitting cold barren wilderness.

New program to benefit urban water courses in Peterborough

The Peterborough Urban Shorelines Revitalization Project gives shoreline property owners a free assessment and provides recommendations they can take, such as planting native plants, trees, and shrubs to keep our urban waterways healthy

In Peterborough, we’re vitally connected to urban water features. Our drinking water comes directly from the Otonabee River, Jackson Creek traverses our downtown core, and Little Lake features prominently in cultural events like Music Fest.

musicNOW – May 2015

Blues rocker Romi Mayes is coming to the Red Dog in Peterborough on Friday, May 22nd in support of her new album. Local favourites The Lohrwoods are opening.

As we hit the beautiful month of May, the buds begin to appear and to blossom and the weather becomes even warmer. It’s an excellent time of year to get out and experience live music. I will be on tour out west this month with Mayhemingways, but I highly recommend each of these shows.

Behind the scenes at Cats

Cats actor Elizabeth Moody, who plays Victoria, has her makeup applied by Peterborough Theatre Guild makeup artist Shelley Moody — who also happens to be her mother. The much-anticipated production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opens on Friday, May 2 at Showplace in Peterborough.

After months of anticipation, the curtain is about to rise on the Peterborough Theatre Guild’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

Arguably the most ambitious theatrical production to hit Peterborough this season, Cats ends what has been a very long string of musicals performed in Peterborough over the past year. But, with opening night only a few days away, it’s clear to the entire theatre community that Cats will be a unique musical spectacle.

The joyful sounds of “Do You Love Me” by The Contours seep from a rehearsal room in the basement of George St. United Church, where the Peterborough Pop Ensemble assembles to make great music.

“Music is kind of like food for your soul,” the group’s business manager Susan Dunkley tells me. “It gets you going.”
