Go green with a natural Christmas tree

When it comes to choosing which Christmas trees have a smaller environmental impact, real trees always come out ahead. They're completely biodegradable, provide shelter and habitat for wildlife and help clean our air.

A Christmas tree strapped to the roof of car or minivan was a common sight over the weekend, as people everywhere brought home their tree for the Christmas season. With Christmas Eve just two weeks away, there is a definite since of holiday urgency in the air.

This time of year, the decades-old argument of real Christmas tree vs. artificial always rears its head. The answer, of course, is always real.

That’ll do, Pig – A review of Babe, The Sheep-Pig

Babe, The Sheep-Pig runs from December 9 to 14th at the Peterborough Theatre Guild, with most performances already sold out. Left to right: Sam Weatherdon as "The Horse", Irelande Farrell as "Ma the Sheep," Mark Nobel as "Babe the Sheep Pig," Katie Oickle as "Fly the Sheep Dog", and Natalee Barker as "Farmer Hogget".

This holiday season, the Peterborough Theatre Guild turns their stage into a barn yard for their annual holiday family play — a production of David Wood’s Babe, The Sheep-Pig.

A Theatre Guild tradition, the annual family show has always been aimed towards kids, but this year director Charles Shamess is doing something very different.

Fighting the silent killer

Dr. Justin Clouthier, a vascular surgeon at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), is using a cutting-edge procedure to help save the lives of vulnerable patients who suffer from a potentially deadly condition. Without donations to the PRHC Foundation, the hospital wouldn’t have the equipment and tools it needs to support the life-saving therapy.

Celebrating the documentary at ReFrame Film Festival

The 11th annual ReFrame International Film Festival runs from Friday, January 23 to Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Peterborough

If the impending barrage of Hollywood’s award season offerings aren’t your kind of film experience, then the ReFrame Film Festival is your premiere destination for alternative media.

Eco-friendly ice melting

When it comes to making sidewalks and driveways there are many alternatives to salt, including Potassium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, and Calcium Chloride.

Last winter, my driveway was an absolute disaster. I was away for a few days, during which time it snowed followed by a period of rain. Several inches of snow became waterlogged and froze into a solid mass, making clearing it impossible.

Art in the Street – December 2014

In this painting by Laura Madera, light is at the dazzling limit of overexposure. It's almost overwhelming, but it makes you want to gaze and gaze. (Photo: Evans Contemporary)

In beginning with painting light, Laura Madera is barely once removed from being in possession of the primal forces of creation.

She is as patient in her approach as she is prolific in her output. Her means is an unfolding that must be coaxed into existence, rather than forced into the confines of executing an idea. If being forced up against a wall is where art goes to die, her antithesis to being rushed into conception is its genesis.

While there are a great number of excellent holiday-related shows happening in the Peterborough area (including some benefit concerts for worthy charities), I’ve have also included some concerts that will be great even without the holiday shine.

First vacation in six years … and then a heart attack

Paul and Suzanne Leroux are owners of The Pasta Shop in downtown Peterborough. In 2011, Paul suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with both a coronary arterial blockage and diabetes. He received care at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

Paul Leroux knows he wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the cardiac care he received at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). He wants others to realize how important donations are to ensuring the hospital has the equipment and technology it needs to continue to provide excellent care.

kawarthaCHOW: Build your own gingerbread house this Christmas

There's nothing like a traditional gingerbread house to get you in the Christmas spirit

The countdown to Christmas is on: there’s more snow on the way and the commercials are telling us that we need all kinds of décor and goodies to have the perfect holiday. Something that I’ve always wanted to make but never have is a gingerbread house from scratch.

Going Green for Christmas

Real Christmas trees are always a better choice over the store-bought plastic fakes. Once Christmas is over, the tree can be left out for collection by the city where it will chipped and turned into mulch. (Photo: Wikipedia.)

Despite the snow melting and temperatures being above freezing the past few days, the Christmas spirit is alive and well. Trees are going up, lights are flicking on, and the malls and downtown shops are starting to see a surge in business.

The warmer temperatures have many people outside taking advantage of the favourable conditions to put up lights and other outdoor décor. These days, everything imaginable is available, from inflatable Christmas characters to lights of every colour and shape and size.
