In 1996, when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was supposed to be a one-off tribute album to the great songwriter Willie P. Bennett (of Peterborough), there was nary a thought that they would eventually become a going concern as a band. At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold.

TSW Cutbacks: The Land of Shining Waters – with no waterway?

Ah, the Kawarthas. Blue skies, green trees and shimmering lakes. A boater’s, camper’s, hiker’s, cottager’s, business owner’s paradise. Or is it?
There’s been a lot of chatter this summer centered around the cut backs with the Trent Severn Waterway or TSW for short. The Federal Government, which manages the budget for the waterway, announced this year that they were cutting back the $16 million budget by $3 million, which for those of you counting at home, is an almost 16% decrease in budget. People have been voicing their concerns over the potential impact on local tourism that these cuts may have, but really this issue is much deeper than just tourism.

Peterborough: A Different Shade of Green
Some people I know have had the opportunity to see different parts of the world that I’ll likely never venture to. My travel experience is admittedly small, but I’ve come to realize a remarkable characteristic about our little community that many of the cities I’ve visited lacked: we have an amazing amount of green space laced throughout this city. No matter where you go in Peterborough, you’re a short stone’s throw away from mature trees and grassy knolls. It’s clearly one of the things that makes Peterborough the gem that it is. However, green space seems to be on the cutting block in our area, with more and more trees coming down every week.
