Nation-wide vigils will be held in seven Canadian cities, including Peterborough, on December 15, 2019 on the third anniversary of the death of Soleiman Faqiri, a 30-year-old Afghan-Canadian with mental health issues who died while in custody at Central East Correctional Facility in Lindsay following an interaction with prison guards. This is the first year the annual community vigil has broadened into a national event. Peterborough Performs: Musicians Against Homelessness, taking place on March 5, 2020 at Showplace Performance Centre, features 15 musical acts raising funds for United Way Peterborough and District. Performers in the Erica Cherney Theatre are (left to right, top to bottom): The Weber Brothers Band, The Austin Carson Band, the Peterborough All-Star Band fronted by Rick and Gailie Young, Kate Suhr and Melissa Payne, Danny Bronson, and The Three Martinis. An additional 9 acoustic musicians will be performing in the Nexicom Studio and in the Showplace lobby. The event will be emceed by Megan Murphy and Jordan Mercier, with all proceeds going exclusively toward homelessness and shelter-related initiatives undertaken by United Way-supported agencies.

Mike Taveroff with his wife Cheryl in front of their original Moondance store at 249 George Street in downtown Peterborough in 1975. One of the reasons Mike decided to close the store in 2018 and retire was the death of Cheryl from cancer the previous year. Shortly after retiring, Mike was himself diagnosed with cancer and, after initial treatment made him ill, he decided to halt future treatments in favour of palliative care.
