Lindsay man arrested for an early morning assault

The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service in Lindsay. (Photo: City of Kawartha Lakes)

A Lindsay man has been arrested and charged following an assault early on Tuesday morning (March 27).

Between 2 and 3 a.m., a man was walking on a footpath in the area of Lindsay Street South in Lindsay. Without warning, another man approached and punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

As he lay on the ground, the victim was able to recognize the man who struck him. The victim went to a local hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries, and then reported the incident to the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service.

On Wednesday March 28th, police located and arrested the suspect in this assault at a Lindsay residence.

Charged with one count of assault is 29-year-old Randy Laughlin of Lindsay.

The accused will make his first appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 3, 2018.

Save money, improve your home, and help the environment with home energy incentives

A energy auditor conducts a pre-audit blower door test on a residential home in Peterborough. Over the past 25 years, GreenUP has conducted energy audits for more than 40 per cent of the homes in the Peterborough area. Currently, GreenUP provides audit services for two energy incentive programs available for local homeowners: the Enbridge Gas Home Energy Conservation Program and the Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program. (Photo courtesy of GreenUP)

At your next neighbourhood gathering, if you ask homeowners whether they have ever received incentives for participating in energy conservation programs, chances are about half of the group’s hands will go up.

Over the past 25 years, GreenUP has conducted energy audits for more than 40 per cent of the homes in the Peterborough area. During that time period, the incentives have changed and the programs have evolved but the goal is still the same: to help our community reduce their environmental footprint, reduce their energy consumption, save money, and live more comfortably.

Currently, GreenUP provides audit services for two energy incentive programs available for local homeowners: the Enbridge Gas Home Energy Conservation Program and the Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program.

Both programs offer the exact same rebates and you don’t need to be a gas customer to access the incentives. The program you are eligible for simply depends on the natural gas provider in the area that you live in. For Peterborough residents, this will be Enbridge Gas and for those living closer to Cobourg and Port Hope, your provider is Union Gas.

If you are thinking about replacing your furnace, putting in new windows, insulating your home, or upgrading your appliances, and even if you have received incentives with the past programs, GreenUP may be able to help you get money back on new home improvements! You could receive up to $5,000 back in available incentives for making your home more energy efficient, including 100 per cent of the costs associated with your energy audits, not including the HST.

The first step to seeing if you qualify is to give GreenUP a call at 705-745-3238. GreenUP has a Registered Energy Advisor (REA) on staff. We will take the time to pre-qualify you over the phone, or refer you to the program that best fits your needs.

Be sure to call before you install any upgrades. This is important because our REA will come to your home to conduct a pre-audit evaluation to assess your home’s current energy use. This will provide crucial baseline data that will be used to provide recommendations for improvements or retrofits that help to reduce your energy bills and to assign your home an energy rating using the EnerGuide home evaluation.

A blower door test alerts a homeowner to potential ventilation issues and pinpoints areas of air leakage allowing the homeowner to centre in on these problem areas to seal air infiltration points in the home, from outside air. (Photo courtesy of GreenUP)

Once you have completed the installation of the two upgrades necessary to access the incentives, the REA will return to complete a post-audit.

This allows you to compare your home’s new improved energy efficiency with your pre-audit.

Your REA will then submit your results to the gas company and you will receive your incentive cheque within eight to 12 weeks.

At this time, you will also receive the rebate of $600 to cover the cost of your pre- and post-audits, both of which provide you with an incredible amount of data about your home.

For example, with the pre-audit, you will receive an energy assessment report that contains data about the home’s existing insulation, mechanical equipment, and air leakage as collected and analysed by the REA.

You will also receive a Homeowner Information Sheet that reports the details about where energy is being used — and lost — throughout the home’s mechanical equipment and building envelope.

“We live in an old house that has been expensive to heat, partly because of air infiltration that cooled the house in winter,” shares Al Slavin, who had pre- and post-audits conducted in 2011.

“During the blower door test a large fan was attached to the outside door, drawing air into the house. When we stood in our kitchen, it felt like a fan was blowing air down from the ceiling where our pot lights were installed — turns out, the pot lights weren’t sealed in the attic and were open to the outside air!”

A pre-audit blower door test alerts a homeowner to potential ventilation issues and pinpoints areas of air leakage allowing you to address these problem areas when considering your energy efficiency.

“For one of our upgrades, we had seals installed in the attic around the base of our kitchen pot lights and the post-audit showed that the source of air infiltration totally disappeared,” explains Slavin, “We never would have caught that leak, or many others, such as around our baseboards, without the energy audits.”

The program requires a minimum of two energy efficiency upgrades to qualify; however, additional measures will result in deeper energy savings. Customers who complete more than two upgrades also qualify for a $250 bonus for each additional upgrade installed, to a maximum of $750.

Upon completion of the installed energy efficiency measures, simply call your REA who will come back to your home and conduct a post-audit. They will leave you with a report showing the improvements to your home’s energy usage.

Your house will also receive an EnerGuide label that shows the home’s new energy-use rating. This is a great feature that is useful if you ever want to sell your home. For more information about EnerGuide home evaluations and EnerGuide label, visit www.nrcan.gc.ca

For more details about the specifics on incentives, qualifying upgrades, and program requirements, please visit greenup.on.ca. To pre-qualify for an audit, call Kristen LaRocque at the GreenUP Store at 705-745-3238 ext. 222.

Depending on where you live, your household income, and how you heat your home, you may be eligible for other incentives. There are other energy efficiency program incentives available in the community, based on these different criteria.

The Enbridge Gas Home Winterproofing program is available to fixed income households and renters through The Windfall Ecology Centre at 1-866-280-4431. A similar program, The Home Weatherization program, is available for Union Gas customers. Visit uniongas.com for more information.

Habitat for Humanity Peterborough provides grants and loans to low income homeowners for upgrades and repairs. Call 705-750-1456 for details.

What’s open and closed over the Easter weekend

Easter is the most important Christian religious holiday. Easter Sunday is the Sunday immediately following the paschal full moon (related to, but not the same as, the first full moon after the spring equinox). It can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25. Good Friday is the Friday two days before Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday.

As Good Friday is a statutory holiday across Canada, all government offices, libraries, beer and liquor stores, banks, and schools are closed, as are many grocery stores and retail businesses (some restaurants and tourist attractions may remain open). On Easter Sunday, almost everything is also closed (some grocery stores are open). On Easter Monday, government offices, libraries, all beer and most liquor stores, and schools remain closed; however, most other businesses are open during regular hours. Many liquor and beer stores and grocery stores have extended hours on Thursday and Saturday.

For your convenience, we provide this list of 256 selected businesses, services, and organizations from across the Kawarthas. While we strive to make the information on this list as accurate as we can, you should call first to confirm hours if you’re travelling any distance (we’ve included phone numbers). If your business or organization is listed and the hours are incorrect, please let us know by using our content feedback form.

GreenUP receives anonymous donation of $50,000 for redevelopment of Ecology Park

Thanks to community donations, including a $50,000 gift from an anonymous donor, GreenUP will be able to begin redevelopment this year of Ecology Park, a popular five-acre showcase of sustainable landscape ideas and resources in Peterborough. (Photo courtesy of GreenUP)

GreenUP has received a gift of $50,000 — its largest single donation — from a private anonymous donor.

The donation was made to the environmental organization’s Growing Ecology Park Five-Year Investment Campaign for the redevelopment of Ecology Park, a five-acre site located at 1899 Ashburnham Drive beside the Beavermead Campground.

Ecology Park is a key location for GreenUP’s work on environmental education, sustainability, and stewardship. Each year, more than 1,000 students visit the park with their classes, their families, or as part of a camp program.

The Ecology Park tree nursery and garden market is a trusted source for healthy and locally grown plant stock. The park is also a location for GreenUP’s educational workshops.

Along with the anonymous donation of $50,000, GreenUP has also received major gifts from Susan Sauvé and Ian Attridge, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, and Laurie and Bonnie Dawe. In addition, more than 100 individual donors have contributed to GreenUP’s Nest Fund.

The donations mean that GreenUP can now begin building key facilities at Ecology Park. Planned development in 2018 will include the reconstruction of the open-air teaching shelter, as well as indoor office and storage space.

“The generosity demonstrated by our donors during the first year of the campaign has been heart-warming,” says GreenUP Executive Director Brianna Salmon.

“The redevelopment and expansion of the existing Ecology Park Children’s Education Centre will create a beautiful outdoor classroom and teaching space at Ecology Park, and will support programming for the next generation of students.”

GreenUP will make an official Ecology Park fundraising announcement and recognize local award winners at its 25th annual general meeting, to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today (March 28th) at the Peterborough Public Library.

The event will also feature guest speakers Chris Magwood and Jen Feigin, co-directors at the Endeavour Centre for Sustainable Building, who will be sharing designs for the new facilities being constructed at GreenUP Ecology Park in 2018.

They will also provide highlights of Endeavour’s innovative programming, including new research on the embodied carbon of building materials and the role of sequestration in drastically reducing the climate change impacts of our built environment.

An awards presentation will also recognize GreenUP’s current Chair of the Board of Directors, Ivan Bateman, who has given 20 years of volunteer service to the GreenUP Board. St. Alphonsus Catholic Elementary School will also be honoured as the 2017 winner of the GreenUP School Engagement Award, recognizing the school with the highest program participation last year.

GreenUP is still fundraising for other phases of the Ecology Park redevelopment, including the installation of the supporting infrastructure to make the facility accessible and to connect it to the Trans Canada Trail, and to integrate a solar photovoltaic system and to support utilities servicing.

For more information and to donate, visit www.greenup.on.ca/growing-ecology-park.

The Canadian Canoe Museum has announced the 2018 Wipper Lecturer will be Geoff Green, founder and expedition leader of Canada C3.

Geoff is an Ottawa-based educator and adventurer who led the 150-day journey through the Northwest Passage on a re-purposed Coast Guard icebreaker called the Polar Prince.

On the ship were three canoes, one of which was a beautiful birch bark craft on loan from The Canadian Canoe Museum.

On Wednesday, April 11th, Geoff will be returning the borrowed canoe (now perhaps the ‘most travelled’ item in the collection!), and will deliver a talk on how canoes and canoe-messaging was an integral part of the Canada C3 project.

The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Canadian Canoe Museum (910 Monaghan Rd., Peterborough), Admission is by donation. For more information, email victoria.veenstra@canoemuseum.ca or call 705-748-9153 ext. 218.

kawarthaNOW.com and Market Hall Performing Arts Centre present award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Fearing for a solo concert on Tuesday, April 17th. (Photo: Mark Maryanovich)

It may not feel like it yet, but spring is here folks! There are no more excuses of snowy nights or your car not starting not to head out and support live music at local venues.

Here are just a few of the shows happening in Peterborough in April, with Market Hall hosting a great week of concerts later in the month.

Samson Wrote at The Garnet in Peterborough on April 4

Head to The Garnet (231 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-874-0107) on Wednesday, April 4th when Guelph ‘unorthodox multi-instrumentalist’ and ‘experimental’ folk-rock musician Samson Wrote (Sam Boer) brings The Paper Map Tour to town.

Checking out some of his music, I really dig the recorder/acoustic guitar combo. Could the recorder be THE instrument of 2018?

Opening the show will be last year’s Peterborough Folk Festival Emerging Artist Mary-Kate Edwards. Tickets are $10 or pay what you can at the door and the show begins at 9 p.m.

Brock Zeman & Blair Hogan at The Red Dog in Peterborough on April 5

Hit the weekend one day early on Thursday, April 5th as Ottawa valley songwriter Brock Zeman and his trusty sideman Blair Hogan return to The Historic Red Dog Tavern (189 Hunter St. W, Peterborough, 705-750-1710) for a show with locals Diamond Dave and the Smoke Eaters.

Zeman and Hogan have toured across Canada and the US to wide acclaim and for good reason. In-depth songwriting and some really tasty guitar work make for a great night out. Add Diamond Dave Russell and his band’s country-rock stylings and you have the makings of an early weekend.

Tickets will be available at the door, with the music starting around 10 p.m.

Hearing Trees at The Garnet in Peterborough on April 6

Check out a nice eclectic show on Friday, April 6th at The Garnet (231 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, 705-874-0107).

Winnipeg indie rockers Hearing Trees, who to me sound like a merging of The Tragically Hip and early U2, will grace the stage as part of their eastern Canada tour.

The group just dropped their latest new studio record, Quiet Dreams, on March 2nd. The Spill Magazine says “Coupled with sometimes cryptic, always captivating poetry, Hearing Trees offers a true masterclass in sweet-sounding catharsis.”

Also appearing will be the rootsy fun group Paper Shakers and local young gun Rhys Climenhage. Tickets at the door, and the show begins at 9 p.m.

Hillary Dumoulin at The Red Dog in Peterborough on April 7

Peterborough singer-songwriter Hillary Dumoulin will release her full-length album Fools Gold on Saturday, April 7th at The Historic Red Dog Tavern (189 Hunter St. W, Peterborough, 705-750-1710).

Hillary is an up-and-comer with an excellent voice and some great tunes. Tickets are $10 at the door or in advance at www.ticketscene.ca/events/20577/.

Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 9 p.m.

Lindsay Barr performs Janis Joplin at the Market Hall in Peterborough on April 13

Often I steer away from tribute shows in this column, but Friday, April 13th features an evening celebrating one of the great artists from the 1960s performed by a local favourite.

“A Musical Journey with Janis Joplin” will be presented at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, 705-749-1146) with Peteborough-based singer Lindsay Barr performing a bunch of Joplin’s most famous tunes.

The evening will also include multimedia clips of Joplin’s bandmates, festival and TV appearances, and more. This sounds like an interesting night full of the slendour and passion for music that Janis Joplin represented.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25 for regular seats and $30 for cabaret table seats (all tickets include fees). Tickets are available at the Market Hall Box Office or online at markethall.org. Tickets are also available (cash only) at Moondance (425 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-9425).

James Keelaghan and Tony McManus at the Market Hall in Peterborough on April 15

Folk Under the Clock presents an excellent double bill on Sunday, April 15th at 4 p.m. at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, 705-749-1146).

James Keelaghan is a fine Canadian songwriter with a distinctive voice, whose rich career includes nine studio records and a track record of masterful storytelling. Tony McManus is a Scottish guitarist who is often considered one of the world’s leading guitarists in Celtic music; however, he also delves into other territory with his repertoire.

This shall be an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $40.50 for regular and $28 for students (including all fees). Get your tickets at the Market Hall Box Office or online at markethall.org. Tickets are also available (cash only) at Moondance (425 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-9425).

Stephen Fearing at the Market Hall in Peterborough on April 17

One of kawarthaNOW’s favourites, Stephen Fearing returns to Peterborough on Tuesday, April 17th to perform a rare solo show at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, 705-749-1146).

Fearing is an accomplished solo singer-songwriter and guitarist, and also a member of Canadian roots supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings as well as Fearing and White. His songs bring stories and anecdotes to life with rich lyrical content and a lot of deft guitar work. He is touring in support of his latest record Every Soul’s A Sailor.

You can read about his new album, his creative process, and more in my February interview with Stephen.

Tickets are $33 (includes all fees) for general admission and cabaret style table seating, available the Market Hall Box Office or online at markethall.org. Tickets are also available (cash only) at Moondance (425 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-9425).

Whitehorse at the Market Hall in Peterborough on April 19

When Whitehorse comes to town, you have to make sure to tell everyone about it: they will be at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, 705-749-1146) on Thursday, April 19th.

The well-known Canadian duo (and couple) Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland have been working together for a few years now and, with each album. they expand their sound with new elements and pieces of other genres. It’s not as simple as rock, and it’s not merely psychedelic surf or spy music. Ultimately, it’s just good music and always a great show.

The show starts up at 8 p.m. and tickets are $38, available at the Market Hall Box Office or online at markethall.org. Tickets are also available (cash only) at Moondance (425 George St. N., Peterborough, 705-742-9425).

Tickets are $43 at the door but there may not be any available as the show is almost sold out.

Skye Wallace at Gilmour Street Music Hall in Peterborough on April 20 and 21

House concert venue Gilmour Street Music Hall in Peterborough is closing out its 2017/18 season with two performances by folk-rock artist Skye Wallace and her four-piece band at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st.

Skye Wallace is what happens when a classically trained singer with east coast roots discovers punk rock in her youth. Skye’s sound is exciting, dynamic, gritty, and beautiful. This truly powerful performer is known for her fun live shows backed by a band of top-notch players.

Seats are a $25 donation, with all proceeds all going to the musicians. Seating is very limited, and tickets are only available in advance by emailing gilmourstreetrob@gmail.com.

International Jazz Day Peterborough with Brandi Disterhef at the Market Hall on April 29

Celebrate International Jazz Day the right way on Sunday, April 29th at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough, 705-749-1146) with Juno Award winning bassist, singer, and composer Brandi Disterheft with her quartet.

Disterheft, who relocated to New York City for an apprenticeship under Miles Davis’ bassist Ron Carte, is bringing three of the hottest jazz musicians in New York City (saxophonist Vincent Herring, drummer Carmen Intorre, and pianist Alex Minasian) for her one-night-only show in Peterborough.

As part of the celebrations there will also be a jazz workshop in the main auditorium before the show from 2 to 4 p.m., as session leaders Sean Hully (woodwinds); Mike Graham (guitar and bass), and Brandon Munro (percussion) help musicians explore and develop improvisational skills. There’s no charge for the public to attend and listen to the workshop.

Before the show, local jazz band The PWB Trio (Christopher Parnis, Ian Webster, and Aaron Blewett) will be playing cocktail hour in the Market Hall foyer.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for cocktail hour and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are $30 including fees, available at the Market Hall Box Office or online at markethall.org.

Peterborough city council unanimously endorses new “Outside the Ordinary” brand

Peterborough City Council unanimously endorsed the new logo and tagline for the City of Peteborough after a March 26th presentation by local marketing agency BrandHealth, which developed the new branding. (Graphic: BrandHealth)

At the general meeting of Peterborough City Council last night (March 26), councillors unanimously endorsed the proposed new branding for the City of Peterborough, which includes a new logo and the tagline “outside the ordinary”.

Paul Hickey, president of local marketing agency BrandHealth, made a presentation to council to explain the idea of the new brand. The city hired BrandHealth in 2016 and is paying the agency $77,000 to develop the new brand, which will include the brand idea, creative assets including a logo and tagline, and a guideline book to assist staff in rolling out the new brand.

In his presentation, Hickey explained the thinking behind the brand idea (“Our location, and the energy of the people who live here, make Peterborough far from your average city”) and why it best represents the city, and provided examples of how it may be implemented creatively.

BrandHealth president Paul Hickey provided some examples of how the new branding might be used in marketing materials. (Graphics: BrandHealth)

The presentation materials explain that the brand:

  • should be about how the city benefits people rather than about the city’s physical or historic features
  • should allow people to see themselves in the brand regardless of who they are
  • needs to reflect how Peterborough has changed over the past 20 years since the last brand was developed
  • should capitalize on Peterborough not being the GTA
  • should respect and align with how businesses, organizations and institutions are already presenting Peterborough
  • should be inspiring, positive, and bold.

Hickey’s presentation convinced council, which had initially rejected the tagline “Live Outside the Ordinary” in November 2017, to endorse the new branding. Last summer, council had also rejected the first tagline developed by BrandHealth, “Where Roads and Rivers Meet”, after negative public reaction.

With respect to the “outside the ordinary” tagline, BrandHealth’s presentation material states:. “It pays tribute to our home which is nestled in the outdoors. It also celebrates Peterborough’s uniqueness, from our vibrant culture, to our innovative business community, to the quality of our post-secondary institutions, to our long-standing leadership in sports and recreational opportunities. We are capable of achieving exceptional things.”

Now that the branding has council’s endorsement, the next steps are for BrandHealth to complete development of creative assets and the brand guideline book.
