Human After All – A review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened in theatres on July 11

In a summer that has seen unusually strong multiplex fare, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might trump them all. It extremely successfully intertwines shattering effects with troubling and surprisingly challenging commentary on the state of our current political unrest.

Is it possible that Hollywood is actually developing a social conscience again? Literally billions of dollars are being spent not only on ensuring that your 3-D experience is optimal, but that pretty subversive accounts of marginalized experiences are being heard. It would be easy —and frankly lazy — to call this projective when these themes are so flagrant and thinly veiled.

After a break through the month of June, the Peterborough Theatre Guild begins its summer season with something a bit different. Director Erin Maxfield has brought Toronto playwright George F. Walker’s dark comedy Criminals in Love to the Peterborough stage.

Is your garden killing bees?

While doing some pruning around the house over the weekend, I discovered that bumblebees have made an interior wall of the garage their home. Over the winter, squirrels chewed a hole through an exterior wall, making a space just big enough for themselves — and now the bees — to enter.

No question the bees are a nuisance, and I could go as far to remove them with pesticides. However, this action would potentially kill hundreds of bees in one foul swoop. Given all the alarming stories we’ve been hearing about the sharp decline in the bee population, I’ve decided to leave them be (pardon the pun) for now.

A Gathering of Courage

As I’m reading over Em Glasspool’s Facebook status dated May 14th, I get a sense of where the event horizon between frustration and inspiration is crossed. You experience the hurt and indignity of being mocked and harassed. Nameless faceless guys in a black car chanting “fag, fag, fag, fag.”
