Saturday, September 4 Concert: Park Playhouse presents The Music of the Guess Who featuring Carl Dixon beginning at 8 p.m. at Park Playhouse (60 King St. E., Cobourg, K9A 1K9). In 1997 Carl was contacted by the Guess Who to join their touring show which worked constantly in the United States. Jumping at the chance to perform some of the music he loved, Carl agreed to join. This happy arrangement ("best gig I ever had") lasted until April 2000, when the original Guess Who singer Burton Cummings rejoined the band for a still-going reunion. Tickets are $25 (+HST). You are invited to the debut performance of a unique theatrical and musical presentation on the late great country singer Patsy Cline. This show features Victoria Pearce, Tim and Gail Rowat and Danny Bronson and his band. Tickets are available now at Showplace box office. Concert: Lindsay Concert Foundation presents Canadian Brass beginning at 8 p.m. at the Academy Theatre (2 Lindsay St. S., Lindsay, K9V 2L6). The Canadian Brass (Chuck Daellenback, Keith Dyrda, Jeff Nelsen, Brandon Ridenour and Chris Coletti) sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto in 1970. With daring leaps from classic to jazz to pop and rock music, after 40 years they are more popular than ever. NEW THIS WEEK Friday, October 1 Concert: The Wolf 101.5 FM presents April Wine beginning at 8 p.m. at Showplace Peterborough (290 George St. N., Peterborough, K9J 3H2). In March of 2009, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame during Canadian Music Week in Toronto. They also received The Lifetime Achievement Award for being part of Canadian Music History for 40 years. 2009 sees the band continue their hectic pace touring both the United States and Canada to acclaimed reviews. As part of The Undressed Tour, Jason will make his way diligently across Canada from tip to tip - including his first ever appearance in Newfoundland - starting October 14th in Peterborough. No 70s' band represented Canada's musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. Between 1970 and 1977, they released 10 albums and 15 singles, with six albums and seven singles going gold. Friday, October 29 NEW THIS WEEK Sunday, November 7 Live Music: The Red Dog presents Lee Harvey Osmond with Special Guests Harlan Pepper beginning at 8 p.m. at The Red Dog Tavern (189 Hunter St. W., Peterborough, K9H 2L1). Lee Harvey Osmond is a Canadian "acid folk" band founded by guitarist and singer-songwriter Tom Wilson, formerly of Junkhouse and a member of the super-trio Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. The band first took shape as a collaboration between Wilson, Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies and Josh Finlayson of Skydiggers, who wrote, recorded and released the band's debut album, A Quiet Evil, in 2009 on Latent Recordings. Margo Timmins, Andy Maize and Suzie Vinnick also contributed to the album. The band's current touring configuration consists of Tom Wilson on lead vocals and guitar, Aaron Goldstein on guitar and pedal steel, Cam Malcolm on bass guitar, Brent Titcomb on percussion and vocals and Ray Farrugia on drums. Until Sunday, September 5 Festival: Shelter Valley Folk Festival presents the 7th annual Shelter Valley Folk Festival from 6 - 11 p.m. at Henkel Farm (295 Vernonville Road, Vernonville, K0K 1S0). Ranked one of the top 10 festivals in Canada this year, the festival prides itself on introducing its audience to music that might not otherwise ever be seen live in Northumberland County. Performers include Andrew Queen, Ariana Gillis, Beaucoup Blue, Connie Kaldor, The Dardanelles, David Woodhead's Confabulation, Fred Eaglesmith, Joy Kills Sorrow, Joshua Cockerill, J.P. Hoe, LAL, Michael Jerome Browne, Shelley O?Brien, The Sojourners, Tamarack (Reunion), and Tannis Slimmon. The festival runs from 6 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday.
