Tens of thousands of volunteers in Canada and across the world are taking part in the 18th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) from February 13th to 16th, 2015. This free family-friendly event is for birdwatchers of all ages who want to count birds to support conservation.

As the winter drags on, a lot of us are eager to be outdoors and in the garden. While it’s far too early to start most vegetable plants indoors, one task you can do to chase away the winter blues is test seeds for germination.

Apsley’s amazing rainbow igloo

For the second year in a row, Carolyn Amyotte coordinated the building a coloured igloo in Aplsey. The 2015 Rainbow Igloo was featured at the Apsley Winter Carnival on February 21st and Amyotte and three fellow parents will be sleeping overnight in the igloo in March to raise funds for literacy resources for Apsley-area students.

For the second time, Carolyn Amyotte is leading a project to build an igloo out of 1,000 bricks of multi-coloured ice — and then she’s going to sleep in it.

Volunteers have completed construction of this year’s “Rainbow Igloo” for the Apsley & District Lions Club’s Apsley Winter Carnival, being held at the North Kawartha Community Centre on Saturday (February 21, 2015). The lighting ceremony for the completed igloo will be held at 6 p.m. that Saturday.

CBC News has released the results of an investigation that reveals 727 sexual assaults were reported to 87 Canadian universities and colleges over the past five years. Trent University, with campuses in Peterborough and Oshawa, reported a total of 12 sexual assaults between 2009 and 2013, ranking 11th on the list when adjusted for student population.

The Peterborough Petes and the Canadian Cancer Society Peterborough and District Unit announced that $72,923 was raised in the sixth annual “Pink in the Rink” fundraising campaign.

The campaign culminated at the Petes game at the Peterborough Memorial Centre last night, where the Petes prevailed with a 6-3 win against the Windsor Spitfires.
